It is enough to make James Bond's legion of fans around the world splutter into their martinis, even if they had been carefully shaken, not stirred.

For the new owners of the 007 super-spy movie franchise have airbrushed two of his favourite things from their film posters - guns and girls.

Bosses at Amazon, which acquired the rights to the franchise how much after purchasing MGM studios earlier this year for around £1billion, made the 'woke' changes to the digital posters ahead of its upcoming installments of the series.

While the next Bond has not yet been anointed - and is not likely to be until next year - fans still regularly tune in to watch classic movies such as GoldenEye, Octopussy and Thunderball.

But when searching for the franchise's greatest hits on Prime Video, Bond aficionados have been left perplexed at the changes made to the film's photoshopped new posters.

Because now, instead of seeing Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig wielding a Walther PPK, Bond enthusiasts are being met with an awkward, digitally altered version of the images.

The actors, who have long been associated with the smooth-talking charismatic intelligence agent, have been left standing without their titular go-to sidearm and the Bond girl to match.

In some even more bizarre cases, like Moore's appearance in the 1979 installment of the series, Moonraker, the poster has been altered entirely.

The original poster (left) of Roger Moore in space has been dulled down in the new version (right) where he is no longer in the solar system, surrounded by women or holding the gun

Marketing for Sean Connery's Thunderball originally had him standing next to Bond girl Patricia Fearing while wielding his gun (left), but the new poster features Connery's Bond standing solo with no pistol in sight (right)

All of the drama has been removed from the new poster of Octopussy, which originally had Bond wielding his pistol while a helicopter flew behind him

Originally, Moore’s Bond stood in a silver space suit surrounded by women as Britain’s best spy went solar, pointing a futuristic version of the gun to the stars amid a flurry of spacecraft and planets.

But this has now been replaced with a dull shot of Moore who is no longer in space, wearing a golden zipped space suit with his hands placed firmly behind his back - and he is crucially, no longer holding the gun.

Like all of the new posters, the backdrop to the new images features a carefully selected colour with a 007 graphic to compliment the palette of choice.

However, like Moonraker, many of the new graphics - seemingly in an attempt to make the posters more uniform and alike - remove the concept behind the plot of the film.

Because like the removal of the solar system in Moore’s 1979 installment, all of the drama has been removed from the new poster of Octopussy, which originally had Bond wielding his pistol while a helicopter flew behind him.

Now, Moore is seen standing in front of a greyish hue background with a red 007 graphic behind him, with the gun seemingly having been removed from the poster altogether.

Amid the dramatic changes, fans have taken to social media to lambast Amazon for the bizarre picture doctoring.

'License not to kill,' one jibed, in a reference to Bond's catchphrase being rendered useless without his firearm.
A second added: 'This is so pathetic' while Elon Musk even chimed in, simply leaving two exclamation marks under a post about the changes.

The new poster for GoldenEye faced particular ridicule due to Pierce Brosnan’s now-clumsy hand placement with no gun to hold.

In the original poster for GoldenEye, Pierce Brosnan’s Bond stared menacingly as he readied his gun to fire - but the new one has the Irish actor clutching nothing in his fist in front of a golden background

In the original image, Brosnan’s Bond stared menacingly as he readied his gun to fire.

However, the new poster has the Irish actor - in what is regarded as one of the best-ever Bond fims - clutching nothing in his fist in front of a golden background.

Others online were quick to point out that the 007 graphic designed by Joe Caroff and features a pistol as the seven, still remains in the new posters.

One furious fan wrote: 'Did they not notice the damn logo has a gun in it?!?'

While some changes were glaringly obvious in their removal of the Walther, other versions of the new posters were slightly more clever in their removal of the weapon.

In the original poster for 2015’s Spectre, in which Daniel Craig trawls the deserts of Morocco to the chilly heights of Austria, Bond is holding the gun in his right hand, by his side.

But Amazon made the simple move of cropping Craig’s hands, while keeping his original pose, in an attempt to conceal the display of the firearm.

The moves to remove the weapon have prompted fury among the most die-hard of Bond aficionados due to its significance in the original texts of the series.

The Bond franchise has long been renowned for its raunchy and provocative marketing images

It was first issued to the intelligence agent in the Ian Fleming novel Dr. No in 1958, and featured in all of the subsequent books as Bond's signature firearm - prompting widespread popularity in pop culture replica collectibles.

Amazon is facing the backlash just one week after it was reported by Deadline that Denis Villeneuve is set to lead the search for the next Bond.

The 57-year-old Canadian director has reportedly been trusted to find the ideal actor to lead the franchise forward.

Villeneuve is said to plan on focusing his attention intends to focus his attention on the task after he completes production on Dune: Part Three.

Amazon has been approached for comment.
