We've made it through January, hurrah! But sadly we can't say we're in the clear of wet, cold weather just yet.
We all know a sudden downpour can come out of nowhere but, with new season clothing dropping into stores, how can we weatherproof our wardrobe while thinking ahead to Spring?
The High Street is bursting with stylish offerings that will be sure to put a spring in your step, even on the dullest of days.
Start with a good coat. Not all waterproof ones have to look gimmicky. You can find stylish designs, such as this reversible mac from Me+Em. With one side classic camel and the other timeless check, it will work with everything in your wardrobe and even comes with a detachable hood.
For lighter showers or sporting activities, opt for this padded jacket from Marks & Spencers. Part of its popular stormwear range, this lightweight coat is great for layering.
But the best year-round coat has to be Delta Roam's Beaumont robe. With a waterproof outer layer and an insulating interior, it's perfect for everything from braving your local Lido to simply walking the dog. Available in six colours, including my personal favourite Warm Sand, it will see you through every weather.
When it comes to layering, my go-to has to be Uniqlo's heattech cashmere blend crew neck T-shirts. These lightweight, super soft tops are ideal under jumpers and jackets and the ultra-stretch fabric creates the most comfortable fit, so you won't have to worry about feeling constricted when layering up.
If you prefer to add layers over the top, so they're easier to remove, then Varley's Aspen gilet is perfect.
Retro ski jumpers are all the rage. Trendy fairisle always stay in fashion and this ME+EM design comes with a detachable snood, so it will see you from the frosty mountains to the city.
Speaking as someone who lives in jeans, they're a great year-round staple. And though you may associate darker washes with winter, they're the hottest colour this year, so they'll see you through the summer too. You can never go wrong with a wide leg as they'll work just as well with a knee-high boot now as they will with a simple ballet flat later.
And let's not forget about accessories. Footwear is crucial.
No matter what time of year, I'm checking the forecast to see if I can brave my suede boots or oatmeal trainers. If you're in need of a weatherproof boot, why not opt for a light shade like Tretorn's cream-coloured rubber boot? They'll stop you from slipping without looking like you're wearing wintery wellies.
And let's not forget trainers. Aloha's patent leather pair are easy to wipe clean and the sky blue colour will bring a breath of fresh air to your wardrobe.
Forget big fluffy scarves. The triangle scarf has become a fashion staple and is ideal to switch to now. This stylish little accessory can still bring warmth in winter and style in summer, so it’s a versatile piece to have in your wardrobe. I’ll be wearing mine with a simple white tee all year round.
I associate baseball caps with warm sunny days, wandering through leafy parks. Only recently have I thought about wearing one on my commute in winter.
They’re ideal for protecting your hair against high winds and drizzle and you can pick styles that work with your outfit so they don’t look out of place.
I’ve been living in this wine coloured style from Anthropologie rain or shine.
