Brooke Boney could be heading back to Australia to accept a plum radio gig, a year after stepping away from the Today show to study in England.

Boney, 38, is considering an offer to join Nova FM as the station's Sydney newsreader after she completes her 'intensive' one-year master of public policy degree at Oxford University, reports Media Diary.

The presenter left the Today show shortly after the Paris Olympics.

However, Boney may face stiff competition for the position.

TV veteran Abbey Gelmi - who joined the ABC six months ago to host Offsiders following Kelli Underwood's six-year tenure - is also reportedly on Nova's shortlist.

In August last year, Boney became teary-eyed as she was given an emotional farewell on the Today show.

The news and entertainment reporter, who began working with the breakfast show in January 2019, was given flowers from her colleagues as she gave a heartfelt statement live on-air.

'I'd like to say thank you to the audience for accepting me. I'm grateful to every one of you for tuning in every day,' she began.
'It's a privilege to go over to Oxford. But it is even more of one that I have got this much love around me. It makes it difficult to leave.'

The veteran presenter added that her appointment on the show was a huge milestone for Indigenous Australians, and thanked the team for taking a chance on her.

'Today was the first breakfast show in the country to put an Aboriginal person on as a full time host. Now it is a very normal thing to do in this time slot. I'm proud of that.'

Karl Stefanovic then paid tribute to Brooke with some touching words: 'We love you and everything you represent, and how hard you work. You have such an immediate connection with everyone.'

Meanwhile, co-host Sarah Abo said they were so proud of Brooke and wished her the best of luck in the future.

In March 2024, Boney shocked viewers when she announced her resignation live on air.

'I have some very big news for you this morning. I've been offered a place at Oxford University later this year, which means I'll be leaving the show after the Olympics,' Boney said at the time.
'I don't want to go into too much right now, because there'll be plenty of time for goodbyes and thank-yous, but I just wanted to share that good/bad news with you all this morning.'

Boney admitted the decision to leave her role on the program was 'really difficult'.

'It's been a dream of mine to be able to study at an overseas university, and it just felt like the right time to take that step,' she explained.
