Model/actress Kaia Gerber says she "felt angry" about her celebrity status and "resented fame" before channeling her frustration into a book club.
LOS ANGELES -- Cindy Crawford and daughter Kaia Gerber are seeking protection from a man they say has been harassing Gerber in-person and on social media.
In a petition for a civil harassment restraining order against Daniel Lee Schoonover - a 35-year-old man from Illinois - filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Oct. 17 and obtained by USA TODAY on Oct. 20, Crawford alleged multiple "concerning" incidents in which Schoonover arrived at her and husband Rande Gerber's home looking for their daughter.
She also claimed the man posts "incessant" comments on Kaia's Instagram account that threatened to kill herself and her husband and expressed a desire "to be in a romantic relationship with, father a child with and harm Kaia."
Gerber, 24, also filed her own request for a restraining order on Oct. 17.
On Oct. 20, the mother and daughter's requests for a TRO were granted until their court hearing, scheduled for Nov. 7.
USA TODAY has reached out to Crawford and Gerber's attorneys for comment. A lawyer for Schoonover could not be reached.
Kaia Gerber 'disturbed' by alleged stalking, Instagram comments
According to Crawford, Schoonover arrived at her home on Oct. 10 and rang a doorbell from the gate outside her and Rande Gerber's home. When there was no response, she wrote, he slept outside the pedestrian gate to the property until she arrived home the following morning.
Before this alleged incident, Kaia alleged, Schoonover had struck up a conversation with her as she was leaving a theater festival in Massachussets in July. She was "disturbed" by his request to conduct a seance and to obtain her phone number, her Oct. 16 declaration states.
After Crawford's alleged encounter with the man on Oct. 12, Kaia found "hundreds" of "nonsensical" comments from him on her posts.
This encouraged her to seek an emergency protective order from the local police station that lasted five days, she said.
"I am very troubled by this situation and it has caused me severe emotional distress," Crawford wrote in her Oct. 17 petition. "I do not know how Schoonover learned of my address. I am even more disturbed that Schoonover has threatened to murder me and my husband, particularly (now) that where I live.
"I fear for my daughter's safety and I fear for my safety as well. Schoonover is physically imposing and is clearly persistent in his attempts to contact Kaia."
