EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- The 19-year-old woman who died after a shooting last month near a Las Cruces park had conspired with two other men to commit an armed robbery that went wrong, according to court documents obtained by KTSM.
As KTSM previously reported, 19-year-old Julia Clark was killed in a shooting that took place on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 4, near Salopek Park in Las Cruces. Another 19-year-old man, whose name was not disclosed, was also shot but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Clark, along with 19-year-old Esteban Munoz and 18-year-old Elijah Sambrano, had planned to ambush the victim and 18-year-old Apolinar Rosales at a park to steal a gun, according to court documents.
After searching Clark's cellphone, authorities found texts that would allegedly explain the plan to commit the robbery.
In the texts, it was discussed how Clark was keeping her location on and would update Sambrano with everything she was doing. Sambrano also told her where to go, where to park, reasons to give for wanting to go to the park, and what to do after the robbery, according to court documents.
The plan began with Clark driving the victim and Rosales to Anthony, Texas, to purchase a firearm.
Rosales stated that the victim had asked him to go with him because he didn't trust Clark, as she was friends with individuals "who don't like him," according to court documents.
After they purchased the firearm, Clark was insistent on stopping at Salopek Park to "smoke," and that's where the ambush took place.
The victim stated that as Clark stopped and parked the Jeep she was driving, a white Chrysler 300 parked behind them, and two males exited with guns in their hands, according to court documents.
According to court documents, one of these men was standing near the passenger side of the Jeep, where the victim was seated, and told the victim to give him everything that he had. The victim threw the gun he had just purchased out of the vehicle to Sambrano then heard gunfire and saw Rosales at the front of the Jeep.
The victim crouched into the seat and then felt pain in his leg and saw that he had been shot. He then looked over and saw that Clark had slumped over.
The victim panicked and quickly exited the vehicle and started to ask a male suspect who was nearby for help. The victim stated he believes the man who shot him was someone he identified and knew as "Eliijah," according to court documents.
Then, after the men in the Chrysler fled in the vehicle, Rosales stated he had to leave because he shot back and proceeded to flee on foot.
A witness on scene, who was parked at the park, provided his own statement and said he saw a man wearing all black to include a face covering and a hoodie, squatted down near where he was, according to court documents.
According to court documents, the witness saw the Chrysler get behind the Jeep and two men exiting from it. He also saw two men who were in the Jeep exiting the vehicle as if the four were going to fight. The man who was squatting down was then seen approaching the men who exited the Jeep and began to shoot them.
The witness said a man wearing a red shirt who exited the Jeep started shooting back and saw a female and the other man get shot.
The two men from the Chrysler, as well as the man wearing all black, got into the vehicle and fled the scene. The witness also stated that the man in the red shirt asked him to help his friend who was shot then ran off, according to court documents.
Clark, who was shot in the head, was airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso where she died on Sept. 6, according to LCPD.
Munoz, Sambrano, and Rosales have all been arrested in connection with this shooting.
Munoz was charged with felony accounts of armed robbery and conspiracy to commit an armed robbery; Sambrano is charged with felony counts of aggravated battery that may cause death or bodily harm and tampering with evidence; and Rosales is charged with felony counts of voluntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence, and a misdemeanor count of resisting or obstructing, according to LCPD.
