Grand Forks, ND - A major construction project at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota is prompting a temporary relocation of aircraft and personnel to Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. Starting this month, 17 B-1B Lancer bombers and approximately 800 airmen will make the move, a shift expected to last around 10 months. This strategic relocation is a key step in preparing Ellsworth for the arrival of the highly anticipated B-21 Raider, the Air Force's next-generation long-range strike bomber. Developed by Northrop Grumman, the B-21s will eventually replace the B-1s at Ellsworth.
"The runway construction at Ellsworth is a key milestone in ensuring we're ready to receive the B-21 Raider," said Col. Derek Oakley, commander of the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth, located near Rapid City, South Dakota.
Residents near Ellsworth can expect to see increased construction traffic in the coming months. Meanwhile, communities in North Dakota's Red River Valley will notice a surge in military vehicle freight and air traffic as the B-1s and personnel temporarily call Grand Forks home.
Earlier this year, several B-1 bombers from Ellsworth were relocated to Dyess Air Force Base in Texas. The Air Force anticipates the arrival of the B-21s at Ellsworth sometime in the mid-2020s.
