An Illinois man lit his family's home on fire after an argument during Thanksgiving dinner and tried to flee, police said.
Erik Crump, 21, was arrested Thursday night after allegedly setting his family residence ablaze and causing 'major damage' to the home, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
He was charged with aggravated arson and residential arson, both of which are felonies.
Crump's family evacuated the house immediately after noticing smoke.
'It's nothing short of a blessing that nobody was injured or killed in this senseless act,' sheriff John D. Idleburg said.
Police were first called to the 40100 block of North Lone Oak Road in Beach Park around 7.30pm, when Crump's family members alleged he was 'antagonizing and arguing' with them during Thanksgiving.
Deputies deescalated the situation, law enforcement said, with Crump agreeing to moderate his behavior for the rest of the night.
But a little over an hour later, police returned to the home after being alerted that it was on fire.
Investigators said Crump's family had told him 'he was going to be kicked out' of their home.
This caused the 21-year-old to leave, but he returned 'a short time later' to his room near the garage.
After that, Crump's family saw smoke filling their house and instantly evacuated.
Police detectives claimed Crump had set his room on fire using an accelerant and left as flames consumed the residence.
The alleged arsonist's actions caused 'major damage' to the home.
When firefighters arrived, they spotted a man who matched Crump's description and was armed with a knife, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said.
He was standing on the side of the roadway, about one block from the burning home, and then 'fled'.
Crump was taken into custody 'without incident' after being found at a storage facility on North Lewis Avenue
Police found Crump at a storage facility in the 39400 block of North Lewis Avenue, where he was arrested 'without incident'.
Canines had previously tracked Crump's scent to a dead-end in the roadway, which indicated he left the area in a vehicle, police said.
Crump was booked into jail at 3.58am on November 28, according to Lake County records.
He appeared in court Friday morning, where prosecutors alleged the argument that set off Crump's actions 'began over a dog', per the Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
They asked for him to be kept in jail until his trial started.
'The defendant stated he decided to do what he did, and he has no real care for the safety or well-being for his family,' Lake County assistant state attorney Nicholas Shepherd told the court, per the outlet.'
Crump is scheduled to be back in court Monday for a detention hearing.
