The FBI is offering a $100,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest of Charlie Kirk's killer.
The FBI asked Thursday for the public's help in identifying a "person of interest" in connection with Wednesday's fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Kirk was fatally shot in the neck while speaking to a large crowd of students outside Utah Valley University.
The agency on Thursday posted a photo on X of a male wearing a hat, sunglasses, jeans and a black shirt with a picture of the American flag and a bald eagle on it.
The FBI also said it's offering a $100,000 reward for anyone with information about a possible suspect or person of interest.
FBI Director Kash Patel previously said Wednesday evening that the "subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody."
But just a little over an hour later, Patel clarified that it was a person of interest who had been taken into custody, and that that person had been released.
"Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency," Patel wrote on X.
Both sides of the political aisle have criticized Patel for his lack of professionalism at an agency that has also been accused of pushing out those not loyal to President Donald Trump.
"It was amateur hour," Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told HuffPost about Patel on Thursday. The Senate Judiciary Committee oversees the Department of Justice.
"He was doing a running commentary," Durbin added. "Historically, the FBI keeps its mouth closed until it believes it's the right time and the right message."
While a suspect still remains at large, authorities said they've recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle they believed was used in the shooting.
"Investigators have also collected footwear impression, a palm print, and forearm imprints for analysis," Salt Lake City FBI Special Agent Robert Bohls said.
Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason said Thursday that investigators have also been able to track the movements of the shooter and have "good" video footage of the person, but said that footage would not be released to the public at this time.
A press conference in Utah was scheduled for Thursday afternoon but was abruptly canceled due to "rapid developments in our investigation," authorities said.
The FBI is asking for anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI and submit photos and video to their tips page about the shooting.
