In case you missed the memo, wide-leg jeans are now the only jeans we're apparently allowed to wear. I, for one, welcome this return to common sense after a long detour through the slim-fit wilderness.

Recent seasons flirted with barrel legs and exaggeratedly baggy shapes. They're still around, but the focus (thankfully) is shifting to something less ostentatious: wide-leg is a stylish silhouette you'll wear year after year.

But finding the right pair of said wide-leg jeans feels fantastically difficult.

How wide is wide? How long should they be? Should they puddle over your shoe, or skim it, or crop before it?

And what colour? White? Indigo? Vintage blue? In theory, jeans are the easiest thing in the world to buy. In practice, they present a minor existential crisis.

One of the pleasures of being a fashion editor is occasionally being able to offer readers something genuinely useful - a tip to make getting dressed easier. And I have one for you: if you want a genuinely good one-stop shop for denim, go to John Lewis.

I know. It's not the sexiest answer. There are plenty of specialist denim boutiques, and every High Street brand has its own wall of jeans. But John Lewis has the best of both under one roof, which makes the whole process far less exhausting.

At the start of the season the store announced that the Los Angeles denim brand Mother would be joining its already excellent line-up of premium labels. With it came the new Snacks Collection - all trendy, exaggerated proportions - which is well worth a look.

Yet in the changing room it was John Lewis’s own AND/OR line that really stood out.

Here are eight of the best pairs - all available at our never-knowingly-undersold friend, John Lewis.

AND/OR Westlake wide-leg, £75

A classic wide-leg shape in this season's must-have indigo denim. True all-rounders: smart enough for the office or dinner out, but relaxed enough for the school run. If you're buying just one pair, start here.

John Lewis high-waist straight, £69

So dark they're almost black. The denim is thick and rigid, great if you love that old-school, wear-them-in feel, less great if you value immediate comfort. The kind of jeans that improve with age - though I'm not entirely sure I have the patience to break them in.

John Lewis relaxed straight, £69

If white jeans fill you with dread, try these biscuit-coloured barrel legs instead. They're cropped on me, though I'm taller than average. A very casual pair - perfect weekend wear.

Hush Nessa wide-leg, £90

The colour is the real winner here: called grey charcoal, but with a soft blue tone running through it. The denim has a comfortable stretch, but crucially still holds its shape.

MOTHER Lemon Twist jeans, £275

My firm favourites. Super high-rise with a zip fly, loose wide leg and a curved outer seam that gives them a very cool shape. The blue is satisfyingly punchy. The brand may skew younger, but that's not stopping me.

Rag & Bone wide-leg straight, £285

Technically a straight leg, but they sit perfectly in that sweet spot between straight and wide. The relaxed wash makes them the perfect casual pair - though perhaps not the do-everything pair I was searching for.

Paige Anessa white high-rise, £290

These look fantastic on: high-rise with a gloriously long 31in inseam. Sadly, with three small children and a daily commute on the London Tube, white denim feels wildly optimistic.

Baukjen flares, £129

I'm always drawn to a high waist like this, and the front pocket detail makes them slightly more interesting than average. Ludicrously soft and extremely comfortable. Technically more flare than wide-leg, but actually more flattering on my shape.
