IKEA Australia urgently recalls $4 kitchen gadget: 'Stop using it NOW'
Source: Mail Online

IKEA Australia has issued an urgent recall for a popular kitchen gadget due to a defect that could lead to serious injury.

The IKEA 365+ VÄRDEFULL Garlic Press in Black, priced at $4, was removed from shelves due to a risk of small metal pieces detaching from the utensil.

This poses a risk if the metal pieces are mixed in with food and subsequently ingested, potentially causing injury.

IKEA Australia made an urgent announcement on its Instagram account on Friday, reminding customers about the ongoing product recall, which was first announced globally in mid-2025.

'Due to a production error, identified after an internal investigation, indicating a risk of small metal pieces detaching during use and subsequently being ingested with the food leading to customer injury, we are recalling the IKEA 365+ VÄRDEFULL Garlic Press,' it said.

The recall only affects a certain batch of the IKEA garlic press - those that have a date stamp from 2411 (YYWW) to 2522 (YYWW).

'Affected products can be identified by a marking of the IKEA logo on the upper handle of the product,' the latest social media notice explained.

An initial product recall notice for this bargain cooking utensil was listed last year on the ACCC Product Safety website.

The affected product is the IKEA 365+ VÄRDEFULL Garlic Press in Black, but it only affects a certain batch that has a date stamp from 2411 (YYWW) until 2522 (YYWW). The product recall is due to a risk of small metal pieces detaching from the utensil, which pose a risk if they become mixed with food and ingested.

The notice, published on June 18, 2025, explained that the recalled garlic press can be identified as an 'aluminium chrome plated utensil with a black plastic handle'.

The ACCC's online recall listing stated that the issue with the garlic press was that 'small metal pieces can detach from the press during use' and that these pose a hazard to Australian consumers because 'detached metal pieces can be swallowed with food and cause injuries'.

The ACCC Product Safety website notice also provided a diagram showing precisely where to locate the IKEA date stamp markings on the garlic press.

IKEA Australia shared a similar product recall notice on its website mid last year, urging customers to stop using the faulty garlic press and get in touch with their store.

That June 2025 notice also confirmed that 'the affected product has the article number 601.636.02.'

'Customers who own an affected garlic press should immediately stop using it and contact IKEA for a full refund,' the recall notice read.
'No receipt or proof of purchase is required. Additionally, IKEA encourages customers to spread the word about this recall, especially if they know that the recalled product was offered, lent or sold to someone else.'
