Jack White has addressed criticism following comments he made about Taylor Swift during a recent interview about songwriting.

The former White Stripes frontman, 50, sat down with U.K. news outlet The Guardian to promote his new book, These Thoughts May Disappear: Jack White Collected Art and New Works 1996-2026. During the conversation, he discussed his creative process and approach to writing songs. When asked whether his work is autobiographical, White referenced a style of pop songwriting that has become increasingly prominent -- using Swift as an example.

"Now it's become very popular in the Taylor Swift way of pop singers writing about all of their publicly aired breakups, which I don't find interesting at all," White told the publication.

He went on to explain in the interview that he does not enjoy writing directly about himself, even when his own experiences are compelling. He suggested that revisiting personal moments through song feels unnecessary to him, particularly when those moments are painful, and said he prefers transforming small pieces of lived experience into fictional characters. By placing emotions into someone else's perspective, White said he is better able to understand himself creatively.

The remarks quickly made headlines across multiple outlets, prompting strong reactions from Swift fans on social media, some of whom argued that Swift had been unfairly singled out. Newsweek reached out to a representative for Jack White for comment via email.

"JW fans. We Swifties read the article, not just the headline. DID you? I get what Jack is saying in his statement but if he used her as an example & explicitly said public breakups (which he did in his answer) that's dragging her & not ragebait," wrote Jacqueline Milom.

Others came to White's defense. Danny James wrote: "I love Taylor Swift. I love Jack White. He has no reason to come for her, which is probably why he didn't. It's not hard to understand, especially with his own clarification."

White later responded directly to the backlash, posting a statement in which he pushed back on how his comments were framed and clarified his intent on Instagram.

According to the musician, his comments had been mischaracterized and stressing that he was speaking only about his own creative preferences. In a statement shared online, White said he "didn't say that I think Taylor Swift's music was 'boring' or Whatever click bait the net is trying to scrape together."

White added that the interview was about poetry and lyric writing, and that he personally does not find it interesting "for ME to write about MYSELF" in his work, adding that imaginary characters are "more attractive to me as a writer." White said that his approach is not a critique of other artists, noting that "Taylor and other singers have tremendous success writing in their own styles" and saying he is "very happy for them that they've succeeded in engaging with so many music lovers in their own way."

White also pushed back against the idea that his comments suggested others should work the same way he does, writing: "Just because I say I have a way of doing things doesn't mean that I think that EVERYONE should do it the same way." He added that artists should "do what works for them," calling their success "obviously appealing to many people."

The musician went on to criticize what he described as a click‑driven media environment, saying moments like this make him "less and less interested in doing interviews" because remarks are often "turned into drama" and used as "bait."
