Sabrina Carpenter was joined by a surprise guest for her Weekend 2 Coachella headline set: Madonna. The pop icon came out during the song Juno, and during the set, she debuted her new song "I Feel So Free," and gave the Coachella crowd an impromptu astrology lesson.

"I Feel So Free" is the first single from the pop titan's highly anticipated new album, Confessions II, a sequel to her 2005 record, Confessions On A Dancefloor.

The audience, both in real life and online, was shocked and delighted by the performance, which will likely go down as one of the most memorable from this year's Coachella festival.

This year marks the Coachella music festival's 25th year. Held in the California desert, Coachella was born as an alternative to Woodstock and has become a linchpin in American popular culture.

In recent years, the likes of Harry Styles, Bad Bunny and Lady Gaga have performed at the festival, and Coachella has become synonymous with influencers, fashion brands and social media domination.

Madonna's appearance in Carpenter's set signifies a bridging of two eras of pop music, and perhaps a moment for the Queen of Pop to coronate a new pop princess.

Madonna joined Carpenter during Juno. As Carpenter sang the line - one that's particularly popular online - "Have you ever tried this one?" she struck a pose, and the song cut to Madonna’s iconic hit Vogue, and she joined Carpenter on stage.

The two performed the era defining 1990 hit decked out in matching blonde hair and lace corsets. They then performed "I Feel So Free." That track has now been officially released, but previously Madonna has sent it out early to select DJs and clubs.

The 67-year-old took a moment to share that the performance was a full circle one for her.

"Twenty years ago today, I performed at Coachella. I was in the dance tent, and it was the first time I performed Confessions on the Dance Floor Part One in America," she said. "And that was such a thrill for me, so you can imagine what a thrill it is for me to be back 20 years later in the same boots, the same corset, the jacket I had on earlier, the same Gucci jacket. So, it's like a full-circle moment, very meaningful for me."

Madonna then spoke about the moon and planets aligning, noting that the new moon is in Taurus and that we "need to work on our communication skills," and "avoid confrontations."

"In all circumstances for the rest of the month, let's try to get along. And to that point, the great thing about music is that it brings people together, am I right? It's the one place that people have to put their differences aside, put their s* down, and just everybody have a good time together," she said.

Madonna found time to crack a joke at Carpenter's height, and said it was "probably the first time I've ever performed with someone who's shorter than me. So thank you for giving me that experience."

At one point, she thanked Carpenter for inviting her, to which Carpenter replied: "No thanks needed, Madonna, you can have whatever you want."
