WASHINGTON -- In a striking display of alignment with progressive Democrats, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has joined forces with Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) to demand Congress immediately reconvene and vote on a War Powers Resolution that would undermine President Donald Trump's bold and necessary military operation against the Iranian regime.
President Trump launched Operation Epic Fury -- a targeted, high-precision campaign involving joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian military installations, command centers, nuclear-related sites, and missile facilities -- after exhaustive diplomatic efforts failed and intelligence confirmed Iran's accelerating path toward nuclear breakout and heightened threats to American forces and allies. Trump described the action as essential to neutralize Iran's ability to produce nuclear weapons, cripple its ballistic missile arsenal, and dismantle terror proxy networks across the region.
Despite the operation's clear strategic rationale and rapid success in degrading Tehran's capabilities, a small but vocal group of anti-interventionist lawmakers -- including Massie -- has rushed to side with far-left critics in an attempt to handcuff the commander-in-chief.
Omar, a consistent opponent of U.S. military action abroad, issued a sharply worded statement and series of posts on X denouncing the strikes.
"President Trump is unilaterally dragging this nation into an illegal and unjustified war with Iran without congressional authorization, without a clear objective, and without any imminent threat to the United States," Omar wrote. "This is a reckless abuse of power that puts both innocent civilians and American lives on the line for a conflict the American people do not want."
She continued: "The American people are exhausted by endless wars built on false promises and paid for with American and foreign lives. Congress must reassert its constitutional authority. We must vote immediately on the War Powers resolution authored by Reps. Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie. This unlawful operation must end immediately."
Massie, who has frequently broken with mainstream Republican foreign policy positions, echoed Omar's language almost verbatim in his own X posts.
"I am opposed to this War. This is not 'America First,'" Massie declared. "When Congress reconvenes, I will work with Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna to force a Congressional vote on war with Iran. The Constitution requires a vote, and your Representative needs to be on record as opposing or supporting this war."
The Khanna-Massie resolution -- a measure long championed by progressive Democrats and now actively promoted by Massie -- seeks to compel the president to halt all unauthorized military action against Iran under the 1973 War Powers Resolution. Critics of the push argue it would embolden the Iranian regime at a moment when decisive American leadership has finally begun to restore deterrence in the Middle East.
While the overwhelming majority of Republicans have rallied behind President Trump's forceful response to Iran's provocations, the unusual alliance between Massie and prominent left-wing figures like Omar and Khanna has drawn attention -- and criticism -- from within GOP ranks. Supporters of the president maintain that swift, authorized action was required to protect American interests and prevent a far more dangerous conflict down the road.
