Melania Trump, in a historic first, gaveled the UN Security Council meeting into order on Monday but her message for the world's children was overshadowed by the president's attack on Iran.

The first lady acknowledged the attack in her remarks when she offered her condolences to the families of the soldiers killed in the fallout from Operation Epic Fury.

"My heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their heroes, who sacrificed their lives for freedom, their bravery and dedication will always be remembered," she said. "I extend my earnest wishes for a swift and smooth recovery to all those who have been injured. You are in my thoughts and prayers during these challenging times. The US stands with all of the children throughout the world."

It was an historic moment for Trump as she became the first presidential spouse to open the United States' presidency of the UN Security Council, whose leadership rotates on a monthly basis.

The focus of the first meeting was on the first lady's priorities: children, technology and education, which are all part of her Be Best initiative. Trump called the meeting to order and allowed the representatives of each country to address the topic. She spoke when it was the United States' turn.

"The path to peace depends on us taking responsibility to empower our children through education and technology," she said.

She also acknowledged the "challenging times" the world faces right now.

"The U.S. stands with all of the children throughout the world," she said. "I hope soon peace will be yours."
"Conflict arises from ignorance, but knowledge creates understanding, replacing fear with peace and unity," Trump noted. "I implore you to build a future generation of leaders who embrace peace through education."

Trump, who was accompanied by UN Ambassador Mike Waltz, was warmly received by the council members.

She called on each of them to speak as part of her duties for chairing the meeting. Referring to her as "Madam President," they all thanked her for her personal interest in helping the children of the world.

Several mentioned her work as first lady.

"We commend your personal efforts as First Lady, with the launch of the fostering the Future initiative, as well as the adoption of the Take It Down Act," the French representative told her. "France also would like to thank you for your mediation role that contributed to the return of several Ukrainian children that were forcibly transferred or deported to Russia."

Trump closed out the two-hour meeting with her thanks to the representatives.

"Thank you. It was an honor to be with you on this historic day," she said.
