Boxing legend Mike Tyson has opened up on his own struggles with weight gain as he campaigns for a healthier America.

The boxer, 59, stars in a new campaign for Real Food - Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr's new health guidelines for the United States under Donald Trump's administration.

Tyson's brutal force and ferocity inside the ring is legendary, earning him 44 wins by knockout across his career, but he revealed that he hasn't always boasted a chiseled physique.

In a dramatic, black-and-white 30-second spot, Iron Mike detailed his own 'fat' phase while emotionally opening up of the death of his sister, Denise.

'My sister's name was Denise. She died of obesity at the age of 25. She had a heart attack,' Tyson said to the camera.
'I was so fat and nasty, I would eat anything,' the clip then cut to Tyson admitting. 'I was like 345lbs. A quarter of ice cream every hour. I had so much self-hate that I just wanted to kill myself.'

The advertisement showed snippets of Tyson chomping down on a carrot and apple before adding: 'We're the most powerful country in the world and we have the most obese, fudgy people.'

'Some thing has to be done about processed food in this country,' he added as the slogan 'Processed Food Kills' flashed across the screen.

The boxing icon is championing the Trump administration's fight against processed foods after Kennedy rolled out new health guidelines last month.

The Health Secretary's new food pyramid declared war on sugar but shockingly emphasized long-demonized saturated fat.

In retirement, like most sportspeople, Tyson was no longer going through quite so strict a training and fitness regimen, and naturally that had an impact on his weight.

By 2009, it was reported that he had ballooned up to 27 stone and was labelled clinically obese, amid an ongoing battle with drug abuse, and was now some 170lbs heavier than his prime.

But Iron Mike took up veganism in 2010, ditching meat altogether, and revealed just what an impact his dietary switch had.

'I was so congested from all the drugs and bad cocaine, I could hardly breathe,' he previously said.

'I had high blood pressure, was almost dying and had arthritis. Turning vegan helped me eliminate all those problems in my life.'

Over the next 11 years Tyson began to shed the weight he had gained thanks to a combination of his new diet and more time spent exercising.

Toyson lost his sister, Denise, in 1990 after she suffered a heart attack at the young age of 24.

Denise, who weighed between 300 and 400 pounds according to reports at the time, was found unconscious by her husband in their home in Queens, New York.
