NCIS fans broke down in tears as a beloved character was killed off after 18 years on the show in 'heartbreaking' scenes.
The latest episode of the series saw Rocky Carroll's character Director Leon Vance killed in a devastating scene.
When NCIS was shut down by the Department of Defense, Director Vance fought to protect the agency's future.
However in a shocking twist, viewers were left stunned when he was shot to death by a corrupt agent in the process.
In a tragic moment, Director Vance was seen having a conversation with a late friend during which he realises he must be dead, as he says: 'I wasn't wearing a vest, was I?'
Fans shared their devastation and shock at Director Vance being called and admitted they 'didn't see it coming'.
They wrote on X, formerly Twitter: 'I was not ready for that! He will be missed. Don't think I'll ever be on board with the decision!';
'I was not ready for this made me cry,'; 'I seriously started crying when he said this. Ugh. RIP Director Vance,';
'That episode of #NCIS is gonna hurt for a while. I didn't expect that ending, nor the surprise appearance at the end....';
'OH MY GOD, WHAT????? #VANCE NOOOOOOOOO,'; '"I wasn't wearing a vest was I?" That line was so heartbreaking,';
'I don't think I'll ever recover from this one,'; 'S23 E13 of NCIS has me bawling like a baby... That was so unexpected... Rip director vance,';
'Holy shit, they killed off Leon Vance on NCIS's 500th episode. Didn't see that coming.'
Speaking to Variety, Rocky said: 'I think it's gonna be a huge shock for people.
'I've been able to wrap my mind around it and come to terms with it because I've known about this since November when I was first told about what was going to happen.'
He added: 'To be able to play one character on one of the most popular shows in the world for 18 seasons that's the equivalent of living to be 105.'
It comes after NCIS actor Mark Harmon made a surprise guest appearance during a crossover event between NCIS and NCIS: Origins on CBS - marking his first on-screen starring return in four years since retiring from acting. He is still holding the reins as executive producer.
The episodes aired on Veterans Day, featuring a young Leroy, played by Austin Stowell, as he investigates the death of a naval officer in a small town.
The story then jumps to the present day, where new information prompts the reopening of what seemed like a cold case.
Mark had previously made a brief guest appearance on Origins during the series premiere in 2024 but had mostly stayed behind the scenes, narrating each episode.
However, co-showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal's pitch for the crossover was too compelling to pass up, according to Harmon.
'I'm very proud of the storytelling that David and Gina are doing on Origins,' Mark said in a statement in October.
'They continue to push boundaries and dive deeper into the characters' backstories. They came to me with an idea for Gibbs that I liked, and it seemed like a good time to check in with him. I hope fans enjoy it.'
Mark bid farewell to his beloved character in an emotional exit from NCIS in 2021.
