Neighbours of a £6million unfinished 'super-mosque' say the empty shell of a building is an 'eyesore' that looks more like a multistorey car park than a place of worship.

Residents in Gillingham, Kent, said they have had enough of looking at the building site, which was meant to boast a 92-foot high minaret, saying it is a blot on the town centre.

The mosque, which was supposed to have a dome and the customary segregated prayer rooms, was ironically meant to replace an old car park at the site.

The place has now been under construction for nearly a decade because the charity funding it - Kent Muslim Welfare Association (KMWA) - have run out of money.

KMWA are searching for a further £4million after their initial £2million investment fell short.

NHS healthcare assistant Joanne Virtue, 57, wished they'd give up their search. She said: 'It's an eyesore and has been like that for quite a while. If they're not going to carry on with it, they can put something else there.

'It doesn't look great. It's ugly and has been like that long before Covid; well over six years.
'There's nothing to say it's going to continue. Either finish it or use the space for something else in the community.'

Jane Liddiard, 61, (pictured) said: 'If they haven't got the money to finish it, they should knock it down'

'It resembles a disused, multi-storey car park, and it originally was a car park. We have lost a car park and gained an ugly building, and we are in very short supply of car parks in Gillingham,' said resident Susan Warner

The building site is 'quite smelly' during the summer months too, Mrs Virtue said, 'I don't know if it's the drainage or water or something like that.'

She said she was glad that the towering building did not overlook her home but one of her friends was not so lucky. She pointed out that there was another mosque in Gravesend - 'about 15 or 20 miles away' - which a lot of the Muslims she works with use.

The super-mosque is planned to have a cafe and a community hall, but these are yet to materialise.

Susan Warner, another local resident, said: 'It's an ugly edifice, for a start. They've not done any work for ages. I understand they've run out of money, but it's an eyesore.

'It's standing there doing nothing. It's not pretty; it's awful and unattractive. I see it when I go shopping, but there are houses nearby that will be able to see it.

'It might never get finished.'

The Muslim population is growing in the Medway Valley, which Gillingham sits in, beside Chatham and Rochester. This super mosque was meant to alleviate the nearby venues, which are currently vastly oversubscribed.

Ms Liddiard's son, Ben Giffin, 37, said: 'I like the idea and I think it will bring a lot of culture and diversity into Gillingham. But it needs to be finished'

Civil servant Jane Liddiard, 61, who has lived in the area for 12 years, said: 'I pass this eyesore of a building every morning and afternoon.

'I am so shocked that they have left it in this state. I just think it's a waste of money.
'It doesn't even look anything like a mosque. It could be anything - it's just a derelict building. It could be an unfinished block of flats.
'It seems out of place. If they haven't got the money to finish it, they should knock it down.'

Ms Liddiard's son, Ben Giffin, he would like the mosque to be there but being in such a state for so long was bad for the town.

The 32-year-old said: 'I like the idea and I think it will bring a lot of culture and diversity into Gillingham.

'But it needs to be finished. We need to find the money to finish it.
'At the moment, it doesn't look good at all. It doesn't create a good impression of Gillingham for people passing by.
'Every day, my mum complains about it. Muslim people I know want to go in there, but it's like, when will it be finished?'

The Daily Mail has approached KMWA for a comment.
