One of Bing Crosby's grandchildren and a star in her own right turned heads on a rare outing in Los Angeles on Monday.

The 68-year-old actress, who won legions of fans as Security Chief Tasha Yar on Star Trek: The Next Generation, seemed in high spirits as she grabbed a drink while running errands around the city.

She kept things effortlessly casual in a graphic T-shirt, joggers and a fanny pack - a far cry from her glammed-up red carpet days on Days of Our Lives, or her nude Playboy spread in 1979.

Fans will also recall her chilling lead turn in Stephen King's Pet Sematary in 1989.

Yet for many, she will always be remembered as the daughter of Dennis Crosby, the first-born son of legendary White Christmas crooner Bing Crosby.

Still trying to guess the mysterious star?

If you said Denise Crosby, you'd be right.

Denise's family history was complicated long before she ever set foot on a stage or soundstage.

In May 1958, her father Dennis - one of Bing Crosby's four sons from his first marriage to actress Dixie Lee - wed Las Vegas showgirl and model Pat Sheehan.

Within days of the wedding, Dennis was served with a paternity lawsuit filed by Marilyn Miller Scott, who alleged he was the father of her newborn daughter Denise.

The case played out publicly for three years before a court ordered him to pay child support and legal fees - a ruling that thrust the Crosby family into an unwelcome spotlight and generated damaging headlines for both Dennis and his superstar father.

The Crosby family would later be marked by tragedy.

Lindsay Crosby died by suicide in 1989, and Dennis died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on May 4, 1991.

Denise also endured further heartbreak when her half-brother, Dennis Crosby Jr., died of a drug overdose on January 15, 2010.

Denise Crosby was born in Hollywood on November 24, 1957, but reportedly never met her grandfather Bing Crosby, who died in 1977 when she was 19;

Her breakthrough came in 1987 when she was cast in the much-publicized return of Star Trek with Star Trek: The Next Generation;

Originally considered for the role of Counselor Deanna Troi, series creator Gene Roddenberry switched parts with Marina Sirtis and cast Crosby as Security Chief Tasha Yar

She got her first high-profile gig in the early 1980s as Lisa Davis on Days of Our Lives, a role that helped put her on Hollywood's radar.

In 1982, she made her way into feature films with small roles in the action comedy 48 Hrs., starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy, as well as Trail of the Pink Panther and its sequel Curse of the Pink Panther.

Throughout the decade, Crosby remained a familiar face on both the big and small screens.

She appeared in music videos for Chris Isaak's Dancin', Michael McDonald's No Lookin' Back, and Black Sabbath's No Stranger to Love.

Beyond acting, Crosby became deeply involved in the franchise's fan community.

Off screen, her personal life has included two marriages - first to Geoffrey Edwards, son of director Blake Edwards, from 1983 to 1990; later to Ken Sylk whom she wed 1995 before couple welcomed son August Sylk 1998.
