A watchdog has issued an improvement notice to a nursing home after an inspection raised "significant concerns" about the quality of care being given to residents.

The Care Inspectorate said "significant improvements" need to be made at Headwell House in Dunfermline, Fife, which is run by Abbotsford Care.

The notice said that by April 30, the home needs to ensure "all individuals using the service receive safe, compassionate and appropriate care that meets their health, safety, wellbeing needs, and personal preferences".

It also notifies Abbotsford Care that if the requirements are not met, the Care Inspectorate "intends to make a proposal to cancel your registration in terms of section 64 of the Public Services Reform (Scotland) Act 2010".

An inspection has identified significant concerns about the quality of care experienced by residents

The 56-bedroom home provides dementia care, residential care, nursing care, respite care, palliative or end-of-life care, and specialist care.

Abbotsford Care, which operates 11 care homes, said it takes the findings "very seriously" and it has "acted immediately" to address them.

The notice states a comprehensive care plan needs to be put in place for each resident that describes "how the person's skin and wound care needs will be met and any preventative measures required to avoid further skin deterioration".

It calls for the required frequency of "repositioning" of residents to be "clearly recorded", and that support with repositioning takes place "at assessed intervals".

The notice also requires that "effective systems are established and used to ensure care plans associated with skin integrity are implemented and consistently followed in practice".

Lastly, it requires that "guidance provided by other professionals is shared across the staff team and used in practice".

A spokesperson for the Care Inspectorate said: "An inspection has identified significant concerns about the quality of care experienced by residents of Abbotsford Care, Headwell House in Dunfermline.

"We understand this is a difficult and distressing time for residents, their families and staff at the service.

"However, our first priority is always the health and wellbeing of people.

"Because of our concerns we have issued an improvement notice.

"This sets out the significant improvements that must be made within a specified timeframe.

"We are in contact with and monitoring the service to follow up on the required improvements."

A spokesperson for Abbotsford Care said: "We take the findings of the Care Inspectorate very seriously and are deeply disappointed that the standard of care in this particular area has fallen below what residents, families and we ourselves expect.

"As a family-led organisation, we place great importance on creating a caring and supportive environment for everyone who lives with us and their loved ones.

"The health and wellbeing of the people who live with us is our priority.

"We have acted immediately to address the recording concerns identified.

"We are continuing to work closely with all our stakeholders and external agencies to support the improvements required and ensure they are sustainable."
