School's out for summer - but not at this new Big Apple charter school.

Strive, a K-5 school in South Bronx which is set to open its doors fall 2026, will be open seven days a week for 12 hours each day.

This is seemingly the first program of its kind in New York - and possibly the US - designed to support parents with busy work schedules.

'We are trying to address a critical part of affordability for parents, which is childcare,' Eric Grannis, the founder of Strive, told the Daily Mail.
'Schools educate children and they also enable parents to work - but they do a very bad job of it,' he added.

Strive will operate 50 weeks per year, from 7am to 7pm, Grannis explained.

The normal five-day school schedule will allow parents a two-hour time slot to drop their kids off in the morning, from 7am to 9am. The mandatory start time is 9am.

In the evening, parents are able to pick their children up between 4.30pm and 7pm, with 4.30pm being the end of lesson time.

'School lets (the pupils) out at about 3.30pm, few jobs end by 3.30pm,' Grannis told the Daily Mail.

Weekends and summer classes are optional, as the school's lenient policy is essentially 'show up if you want and when you want.'

'You could drop off your kid for a couple of hours while you do your laundry or you can drop off your child for 12 hours while you drive an Uber or deliver packages for Amazon,' he said.

Parents don't have to alert the school ahead of time because Strive will be open and ready to educate students either way.

Optional hours and days involve a combination of 'fun and learning,' with no 'formal education' but periods of recreational time where children read books, play sports and games, and take part in science experiments.

To heave more burden off the shoulders of working parents, the school - which is mainly taxpayer-funded through the government - will serve free meals every day.

Strive will have 325 students enrolled in its first year, with an $8million budget, the New York Post reported.

A staggering $825,000 was raised from private donations to help cover its initial expenses before opening, per the outlet.

The school plans on growing and educating 544 bright students, as it's able to open this year because they obtained a state limited operating license.

The license is a temporary permit for the school while completing its full licensure requirements.

Teacher staffing is also no issue here, as Strive will employ permanent 9am-5pm 'lead teachers,' with teaching assistants and other staffers scattered for the optional hours.

'We are a one-stop shop,' Grannis said.

Charter schools are independent public schools that operate under contract and are founded by not-for-profit Boards of Trustees per NYC Public Schools.
