Looking for Friday's Midi hints and answers? You can find them here:

New Midi puzzle today without any sort of crazy shenanigans like we saw yesterday. Does that make it easier? Not really.

What Is The NYT Midi Crossword?

The NYT Midi Crossword (play it here) sits directly between the very small NYT Mini Crossword and the main NYT Crossword. While the Mini is often viewed as a speed challenge, the Midi is hard enough that speed runs will be less of a factor. It's small enough that it won't take an entire afternoon to solve.

The Midi Crossword is being spearheaded by NYT Games Puzzle Editor, Ian Livengood, who also works on Pips. He will write about three Midi Crosswords a week, with other constructors filling in on the other four.

The NYT Midi Crossword is different in a few key ways beyond just size.

  • The Midi will be between 9x9 and 11x11 squares each day, and unlike the other NYT Crosswords, won't vary by difficulty each day.
  • The Midi will have themes every day. For instance, a theme could be "Food for Thought" and several of the clues will be food-related (or food-and-thought related). This theme also serves as the title of each puzzle, which the other Crosswords do not have, similar to how Strands have themes/titles each day.
  • The NYT Midi Crossword will play around with format, using interesting designs that are asymmetrical and could tie into the daily theme, such as a heart-shaped Crossword. About once a week, the Midi will have some kind of visual flourish.
  • Some Midi Crosswords will include 2-letter words and repeating answers, which you won't see in traditional Crosswords.

I also forgot that Netflix used to literally mail DVDs to you, which is adorable in hindsight. Who knew what they would become today?
