In response to questions about the union, North reportedly dropped a famous line from a classic 1939 film.
Oliver North and Fawn Hall, two central figures in the Iran-Contra firearms scandal in the 1980s, were quietly married last month.
Journalist Michael Isikoff broke news of the Aug. 27 wedding on his SpyTalk Substack on Monday. A copy of the marriage certificate obtained by The New York Times indicates North, 81, and Hall, 65, tied the knot in a civil ceremony that took place in Arlington County, Virginia, and was officiated by Dean S. Worcester, a retired district court judge.
When CNN reached him by phone Tuesday, North declined to comment on the report, but offered a line made famous by Clark Gable's character in the 1939 film, "Gone with the Wind."
"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn," he told the outlet.
North, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel, was the National Security Council staffer under President Ronald Reagan. He rose to conservative stardom after playing a key role in the secret sale of arms to Iran, which was under an arms embargo at the time.
Hall, North's secretary, admitted to smuggling documents that possibly implicated her boss's involvement out of the White House complex by stuffing them under her clothing and, later, frantically shredding them.
North was convicted of three felonies for his role in the scandal, though those convictions were later vacated by an appeals court. He stayed active in politics and, in 1994, captured the Republican nomination for a Senate seat in Virginia but lost to then-incumbent Sen. Chuck Robb (D-Va.).
In 2018, he was named president of the National Rifle Association but stepped down from the position less than a year later after a dispute with the NRA's chief executive, Wayne LaPierre.
Hall, meanwhile, fled Washington, D.C., for Los Angeles, where she worked as a part-time model and married Danny Sugerman, manager of the legendary rock band The Doors.
Though she's mostly avoided the spotlight, she reportedly attended a memorial service for actor-comedian Richard Lewis, known for his roles in "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm," last year.
Though Isikoff's SpyTalk report is light on specifics, he cites a friend of the couple who says their relationship took a romantic turn after reuniting at the funeral for Oliver North's wife of 56 years, Elizabeth, in December.
None of North's four children reportedly attended their father's wedding to Hall. Sarah Katz, who is one of North's daughters, told The New York Times she and her siblings "didn't know it was happening."
"Mostly we hope it won't impact our relationship with our dad because we do love him and we're still in the process of mourning our mother," she added.
