A police drama that fans have compared to popular hits including Breaking Bad and The Sopranos has rocketed up the Netflix charts.

Fans hailed the series 'one of the best cop shows ever made' before it was uploaded to the streaming giant this month, over a decade it was last on screen.

Southland, which originally hit screens between 2009 and 2013, followed the live of police officers working for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Created by the Emmy Award-winning writer Ann Biderman, it starred Michael Cudlitz as John Cooper, Ben McKenzie as Ben Sherman and Regina Kind as Lydia Adams.

An official show synopsis teases: 'Veteran Los Angeles cop John Cooper is assigned to train rookie Ben Sherman, who finds himself questioning whether he has the right stuff to be a police officer after witnessing Cooper's no-nonsense approach.'

It was such a hit among fans that the final series of the show even secured a strong 100 per cent perfect rating on reviews site Rotten Tomatoes.

Fans were left devastated by its cancellation more than a decade ago, taking to the sit to praise the 'staggeringly good' series.

On its return, being uploaded to streaming site Netflix, it has quickly climbed up the top ten charts - with viewers binging all five of the available seasons.

Heaping praise on the series, one viewer wrote on IMDb: 'Ridiculously underrated. Southland is absolutely one of the best cop dramas to ever be made!'

Since hitting the streaming service, the drama has reached number four on Netflix's coveted global Top 10 most-watched chart.
