MUSKEGON, MI - After widespread criticism from residents and other beachgoers for raising beach parking fees, the Muskegon City Commission is expected Tuesday to vote to lower some rates.
On Nov. 26, city commissioners unanimously approved an increase in Monday, Tuesday and Thursday daily passes from $7 to $10, making Wednesdays free, and Friday through Sunday's daily pass going from $10 to $20. Seasonal passes increased from $20 to $40.
The goal was to address overloaded parking, transportation and digital options for payment with the rate hikes. But city staff said feedback came directly to city hall and commissioners following the Nov. 26 vote.
"Following the city's recent beach parking fee adjustments, which were the first price increases since 2021, there's been a variety of views shared online and directly with city officials," Muskegon Mayor Ken Johnson said.
During the commission meeting Tuesday, Dec. 10, a vote is planned to lower the weekend parking price from $20 to $15 and to offer a sale for the rest of the month of December where season passes, now priced at $40, will be buy-one-get-one free.
Residents are able to get two seasonal beach parking passes for free, as previously approved. Nonresidents must buy a daily or seasonal pass or risk getting a $30 parking ticket.
Visitors to Pere Marquette Beach, Margaret Drake Elliot Park, Kruse Park and Harbour Towne Beach must pay for parking.
"Overall, changes to the beach parking program... aim to balance the need for investments in park amenities... with a desire to provide opportunities for all," Johnson said.
The mayor proposed new changes - lowering the weekend price and starting a BOGO sale - at a Legislative Policy Committee meeting earlier this week.
The city commission is expected to discuss the beach parking program during their work session on Monday, Dec. 9 ahead of the Tuesday expected vote.
