New federal opposition leader Angus Taylor has copped fresh ridicule over a social media blunder which quickly turned into a viral internet meme.

Taylor was elected head of the federal Liberal Party on Friday morning, becoming the new opposition leader after knifing Sussan Ley nine months into her tenure.

The 59-year-old won a leadership spill on Friday morning 34 votes to 17 after weeks of infighting over the direction of the opposition.

The leadership spill followed polling that showed the coalition's primary vote had slumped to a record low and had been overtaken by Pauline Hanson's One Nation.

However, Taylor's Facebook fail from 2019 has come back to haunt him right when the spotlight on him is at its brightest.

The MP quickly became a meme after his official Facebook account commented on one of his posts, saying how 'fantastic' he was.

In the post, Taylor boasted about creating 1,000 additional parking spaces at Sydney's Campbelltown station, in his electorate of Hume.

Four hours later, his official account replied: 'Fantastic. Great move. Well done Angus'.

Taylor's team quickly deleted the self-attaboy slap and blamed a staffer for the error.

The phrase turned into a viral sensation as Aussies repeated the comment in his subsequent posts, writing: 'Fantastic. Great move. Well done Angus'.

'Me whenever I show off my soccer skills: 'Fantastic. Great move. Well done Angus',' another man named Angus posted on X, known as Twitter in 2019.

The meme roared back to life this week after Taylor resigned from Ley's shadow cabinet just days after winning the leadership from his opponent.

Australia's youngest-ever senator Charlotte Walker, 21, took a brutal swipe at the Liberal Party on Thursday, slamming Taylor as a 'dud' in a fiery Instagram video.

'I have not been in federal parliament for long, but what I can tell you already is that Angus Taylor is a dud,' she said.

The clip then abruptly cuts to the iconic Curb Your Enthusiasm theme.

In the comments section of her own post, the senator added another jab, writing: 'Fantastic. Great move. Well done Angus'.

Australia's youngest-ever senator Charlotte Walker jumped on the meme bandwagon while taking a brutal swipe at the Liberal Party's spiralling internal chaos

Walker took a more serious tone about the saga in a statement to Daily Mail.

'I'm no fan of Sussan Ley, but it is disheartening to see the Liberals undermine their first female leader from day one,' Walker said.
'Some of the conduct we're seeing from the Liberals, including the blokes meeting to scheme before the funeral of their female former colleague, risks pushing away young women from getting into politics.'

Walker criticised her Liberal counterparts for focusing more time on party infighting than Senate Estimates, which has been underway since Monday.

'As government senators, we're in Estimates this week working for the Australian people and asking questions of department officials,' she said.
'Instead of the Liberals doing their job, they've been focused on themselves, walking up and down the corridors, on their phones, doing the numbers for Angus Taylor.'

Liberal senator Jane Hume has been confirmed as Taylor's deputy.

Daily Mail political editor Peter van Onselen says the party is expected to shift in a more conservative direction under Taylor's leadership.

'Angus Taylor's win means that the Liberal Party will return to the core business conservatives expect it to.
'Immigration, fiscal discipline and possibly a tax reform package will dominate his alternative agenda for government.'

However, van Onselen warned Taylor still faces a significant personal challenge in stepping into one of the toughest roles in politics.

'The biggest challenge Taylor will face are his own limitations. He's never been an impressive performer, not as a minister or shadow minister. Opposition leader is a tough job, he'll need to step up to perform the role successfully.'
