Sydney Sweeney has finally flipped the script after a string of brutal box-office misfires.

The actress, 28, is back in the win column thanks to The Housemaid, which debuted to a strong $19-20 million domestically in its opening weekend.

The psychological thriller from director Paul Feig carved out a notably successful start in the face of stiff competition from James Cameron's latest Avatar installment.

The Housemaid's stellar launch marks a dramatic turnaround for Sweeney, whose recent theatrical releases Americana, Eden and Christy failed to connect with audiences.

Those three films, combined, earned less over their entire box-office runs than The Housemaid pulled in during its first few days in theaters, according to Movie Web.

The psychological thriller casts Sweeney as Millie, a troubled young woman who takes a live-in housekeeping job for a wealthy, seemingly perfect couple portrayed by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar.

What begins as a fresh start quickly unravels into a dangerous spiral of manipulation, obsession, deception and explicit sexual tension - and audiences appear to have embraced the unsettling ride.

Asked about the possibility of a sequel, Sweeney delivered a noncommittal answer to Entertainment Weekly.

'I think that we'll just have to wait and see,' said Sweeney, who plays the role of Millie Calloway in the hit film, which also features Elizabeth Perkins, Michele Morrone and Indiana Elle.

The Emmy-nominated actress alluded to the 2022 novel by Freida McFadden that the film was based off of.

'I hope that the audience loves the movies just like we love the books,' Sweeney said. 'And we can continue to hopefully share that love within more of the films.'

Seyfried told the publication of a potential sequel, 'Listen, if it doesn't do well, you can call it off, but if it does, well, it's absolutely a franchise.'

Seyfried said producers 'know that if they make another one,' she'll be interested after having 'so much fun' making the film with Feig, the filmmaker behind hits such as Bridesmaids, The Heat and A Simple Favor.

Amanda Seyfried said playing the role of Nina Winchester in the motion picture was akin to a 'therapeutic' experience.

Said the actress, 40: 'I channeled one of my fears in life. One of the things that I really struggle with when I'm with people - working with people, or having to be near people - who are unpredictable and hot and cold.
'This is who Nina is when you meet her. It was really, really fun and interesting to channel what I fear most. Try to find the scariest pieces of that and portray them.'

Sweeney's box-office rebound comes as Avatar: Fire and Ash dominated the weekend overall, launching with $88 million domestically.

While that figure marks a noticeable dip from the franchise's previous opening, the sci-fi behemoth still towered over the charts.

Elsewhere, Angel Studios' animated biblical musical David surprised with a second-place finish, while Paramount's latest SpongeBob sequel and Disney's Zootopia 2 rounded out the top five.
