Fans are flocking to a run-down shopping centre to take photos of the escalators - after it featured in Taylor Swift's latest music video.

The Whitgift Centre in Croydon has been put on the map by the US singer after she used it as an unlikely backdrop for her tune Opalite.

Swift is thought to have filmed at the shopping centre - which opened in the 1970s - in November last year.

The video was then released over the weekend - much to the bemusement of the internet and locals in south London.

However, it seems as though the tired shopping centre may have been given a new lease of life by Swift.

Part of the video sees the singer descend on an escalator opposite a shop, which is a Clarks shoe store in real life.

Speaking yesterday, the shop's manager Jo says she had noticed people turning up to take a picture of the escalators after the video was released.

She said: 'It was only our store that was used. It was mad. Obviously, it was all secret, so it was a relief when it all came out.'

Kimberley Roberts, who worked for years at the Claire's Accessories store, heaped praise on Swift for championing the disused shopping centre, where more shops are now shut than open.

Other Croydon natives said they had no idea Swift had filmed the video at the Whitgift Centre, only discovering it had been used after seeing the star descend the escalators.

The shopping centre - famed more for its tired appearance than its association with pop stardom - was transformed into a nostalgic paradise from a previous decade for the video.

Some locals praised Swift for putting Croydon 'on the map', though others fumed at reading articles describing the shopping centre as 'abandoned'.

Most agreed, however, that it was a strange choice of location for the international pop star.

Friends Laura Williams and Eve Burgess both remembered the Whitgift Centre being abuzz with shoppers and had come down to reminisce after spotting it in Swift's video.

'Croydon used to be the place to be,' 23-year-old Laura, a manager at Costa, said.
'We used to come here every weekend. We saw online it was an 'abandoned shopping centre'.
'When we were kids, it was busy all the time, but I guess it kind of is abandoned now.
'We haven't been back in years, so we came to see it.'
'I thought [Swift's video] was made with AI,' 25-year-old Eve, who works as a nanny, added. 'It's so weird. Why would she come to Croydon?'

Steph Deering, who has lived in Croydon all her life, said she wasn't happy about the American star filming in her town.

'I don't like her at all,' the 27-year-old said. 'Her music's the same old, same old. I prefer Queen.
'No one knew she was here. Why here? Like, why? All of the shops are closed. She could have chosen somewhere else, but she came and chose Croydon.'

Kimberley Roberts, who worked for years at the Claire's Accessories store, heaped praise on Swift for championing the disused shopping centre, where more shops are now shut than open.

The 42-year-old said that, in its heyday, the precinct was packed every day.

'If she's putting Croydon on the map, I am now her biggest fan,' Ms Roberts said. 'I used to work down here at Claire's for years. Now, it's dead as a dodo.
'I used to like coming to Croydon, but now it's sad and empty.'

On the glow-up the centre got for the video, Ms Roberts added: 'It never looked anything like that. I'm not a Taylor Swift fan. I would've preferred Adele. She's a Brit and she's a London girl.'

Fakto Ecclesia, a busker whose repertoire includes a cover of a song by Swift and Ed Sheeran, said he remembers them setting the stage for the shoot last year, but had no idea what it was for.

'No one told me,' the 46-year-old who performs outside the Whitgift Centre said.
'I saw them setting it all up. Taylor Swift's alright; all the criticism is just from people who are jealous.'

Sarah Jones, the local Labour MP for Croydon West, gushed about Swift filming in the town, writing on X, formerly Twitter: 'Not every day Taylor Swift films a video in Croydon's Whitgift Centre!'.

The Opalite video features British singer Lewis Capaldi, Irish actors Domhnall Gleeson and Cillian Murphy and presenter Graham Norton.

The idea for the video came about when the cast all appeared together on the Graham Norton Show, with Gleeson joking that he was hoping to get in one of Swift's music videos.
