Warning: This post contains spoilers for season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty.
Jenny Han has done it again.
Han, who wrote the books that The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on, surprised fans of the TV show adaptation with another notable deviation from the source material in the Aug. 6 episode -- the fifth episode of the third and final season, titled "Last Dance."
The episode, told from Conrad's (Christopher Briney) point of view, sees a flashback to him and Belly (Lola Tung) having sex before they broke up.
This came as fans were also treated to the iconic peach scene from the books, with Conrad wiping the fruit juice from Belly's chin with his shirt. This reignites Belly's feelings for him, which is tricky because she is currently planning a wedding with his brother, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).
Han knows what she's doing, too. The author shared a photo of Tung holding a peach on Instagram the morning of the latest episode drop, captioning it, "Team Conrad you up??"
One commenter had kind words for Han and Briney, writing: "just want to say you did an amazing job directing and also shout out to chris for his beautiful performance."
Someone else wrote that Han "did your big one with this episode," as many deemed it "the best episode ever" or said that it "ruined" them.
One even noted an appreciation for the show staying close to the source material in a pivotal scene.
"I will never be over the peaches scene and how it was word for word from the book," they wrote.
While Belly doesn't lose her virginity to either Conrad or Jeremiah in the books, she does with Conrad in a key season 2 flashback scene -- a notable deviation from the novels.
The moment occurs in the second episode of season 2, as snow falls on Cousins Beach and the two lovebirds cuddle up next to the fireplace inside. "I want to," Belly insists after Conrad tells her they don't have to do anything she doesn't want to. "I want it to be with you."
"Belly choosing to have sex with Conrad was really driven by Belly and her desire and what she wanted to do," Han told Entertainment Weekly in May. "It was really important to me for that moment to be just a very nice memory for her, that is a moment in time where she really loved that person and it happened exactly how she dreamed of and how she wanted it."
"I don't think that has to follow her anywhere else other than what that was, a really special moment to both of the characters," she added. "But I don't think it has to drive everything else that comes after it."
"There are definitely changes," the author told the magazine about season 3.
"There are surprises," she teased. "And there are things that aren't exactly like the books."
Han refused to tell EW if these changes would impact who Belly chooses at the end of the series, leaving fans no other choice but to continue watching to the very end.
