For parents-to-be, naming their child is one of the most important tasks, with the moniker chosen sticking with their little one for life.
Some turn to friends and family for inspiration while others look for new and interesting names.
Last year some of the top baby names predicted to take off were distinctly unusual, with Cyan, Xavi, Bash and Maven among some of the predictions.
And in some cases, parents will choose relatively traditional names, but will opt for a unique spelling to make their child stand out from the crowd - but sometimes, the child in question can suffer from their parents' choice.
One woman, whose parents gave her a name with unique spelling, has revealed how their decision has had repercussions for her throughout her life.
The woman has been left so embarrassed by her name she's now desperately trying to change its spelling after years of confusion.
The mortified woman revealed she has been made fun of and people are constantly mispronouncing it and she's had enough.
In a post on a Reddit, she wrote: 'My name is Bayleigh, any suggestions for a non tragedeigh spelling or alias?'
A woman has been left so embarrassed by the spelling of her name Bayleigh she's now desperately trying to change its spelling after years of confusion
In the now deleted post seen by The Mirror, she added: 'I get made fun of and it gets pronounced as bay LEIGH (rhyme with sleigh) and I hate to say it but that seems like the more accurate pronunciation in English.
'I also have trouble pronouncing it due to an accent so I always have to pause in between syllables and say "Bay... Lee".
'My husband calls me Bay and as do a lot of my childhood friends but I was wondering if I should go by that or alter my spelling to "Bayley" or "Bailey".'
And Reddit users were more than happy to weigh in and give their thoughts on what she could change her name to.
One user wrote: 'I think Bailey would be a nice alternative', while another said, "Bailey" is the traditional spelling, and I think is a beautiful name just as it is.'
Another encouraged the woman not to worry too much about the name change, commenting: 'Just do Bailey. No need to overthink it. They can still call you Bay but I wouldn't want Bay to be my formal, full name.'
And while unconventional spellings are on the rise, traditional names are still topping the list of popular baby names.
Last year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released the latest new name data for England and Wales, from births in 2022.
Olivia was once more been crowned the most popular baby girl name. Meanwhile Isla, Ava and Amelia also ranked highly.
Oliver dropped to second place in 2021, having been the most popular moniker for eight years before Noah overtook it.
Data from the ONS also shows that the name Muhammed - which ranked 20th in 2012 - has soared in popularity in recent times, ranking at number two.
More old fashioned names are becoming much rarer, says the ONS' Dr James Tucker.
He explained: 'Noah was the most popular name for boys in 2022, for the second year in a row, having replaced Oliver at the top in 2021. Oliver has now slipped to fourth most popular boys' name, behind Muhammad and George.
'Olivia remained the most popular girls' name in 2022, having held the top spot since 2016. In second and third place for the girls it's Amelia and Isla, both unchanged from 2021.
'Theodore, Theo and Freddie are three new entries into the top 10 boys' names in 2022. Isabella is the only new entry into the girls' top 10.'
But for parents in need of inspiration, Dr Tucker suggested looking at who's famous.
