One lucky thrifter is celebrating what might be the ultimate secondhand score -- an Xbox console for just $25.

The find, shared by Holli (u/yeahIvegotnothing) in the r/ThriftStoreHauls subreddit, has sparked excitement among bargain hunters and gamers alike. The post, titled "I'm gonna be riding this high for the rest of my life," includes an image of the game console from Microsoft.

The Reddit user, who did not share her last name, is a 33-year-old nanny living in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

She told Newsweek: "I got it from Deseret Industries in American Fork, Utah. I'm not sure the year, but it seems pretty new. It was still set up with the previous owner's accounts, so I reset it so I could connect my accounts to it. It works great."

The caption of the post details the unexpected win, saying: "It was behind the collectibles case and had a 'sold' paper on it but I asked about it anyways because they only hold the items for an hour and it had been close to 2 hours at that point," the poster explained in the caption, adding, "I expected it to be a dud since it was only $25 but it works! Now I just need to get a controller for it, and I'm gonna give it to my sister so my niece can play on it."

The thrifter's instincts paid off -- big time. For comparison, Microsoft's website lists certified refurbished Xbox consoles starting around $250, while new models cost roughly $450 at the time of writing. That makes this thrift store gem a fraction of the usual price.

There has been a growing trend in secondhand shopping. A 2025 report by Capital One Shopping said 93 percent of Americans shop online for secondhand items, and the U.S. resale market -- worth an estimated $56 billion in 2025 -- is projected to hit $61 billion in 2026.

With over 25,000 resale and consignment shops nationwide, thrifters save an average of $2,071 annually by opting for pre-owned goods, according to the report.

Reddit users were quick to cheer on the original poster and share their own bargain tales.

U/megaman368 added: "Sweet. I got a PS4 for $25 from goodwill of all places. It just needed a controller."
U/XxDJ-DavidxX commented: "I found an OG Xbox one for $13 a couple months ago...Console, power supply, HDMI & usb controller cables, and a Kinect."

Not all comments were celebratory -- some offered cautionary advice. U/kimbohpeep posted: "Open it up and check for bugs. Too many horror stories."

Another user, u/Candlehoarder615, shared a grim anecdote: "My ex husband worked at GameStop for 5 yrs and the amount of both dead and live roaches that came out of consoles being traded in was horrifying..."

The poster Holli told Newsweek: "It's down at my sister's, so I haven't been around it to check for bugs, but I think we're good. Hopefully, at least."
