President Donald Trump has hit a new approval-rating low during his second term in office, a survey from CNN conducted by SSRS shows on Wednesday.

Shifts in approval and disapproval ratings could signal broader erosion and complicate the Republican Party's midterm strategies, especially as multiple trackers show Trump significantly underwater nationally.

Recent surveys also recorded record or near‑record lows within key demographics, including men and independent voters, potentially compounding headwinds for the White House amid public concern over the cost of living in the U.S. and the ongoing war with Iran.

According to the poll, Trump's approval rating is 35 percent, with a disapproval rating of 64 percent. The survey was taken from March 26 to March 30 among 1,201 respondents, with a 3.2 percent margin of error.

In a poll taken from February 17 to February 20, the president's approval rating was 36 percent, with a disapproval mark of 63 percent. Trump's approval rating once dipped below 35 percent -- at the end of his first term following the attack on the U.S. Capitol -- in a poll taken from January 9 to January 14, 2021, when it hit 34 percent.

Trump's approval rating for handling the economy has also dropped to a new low of 31 percent, the poll shows.

According to another poll from The Economist and YouGov released on Tuesday, the president's approval rating is 35 percent, with a disapproval mark of 58 percent. The poll surveyed 1,679 U.S. adults from March 27 to March 30, with a 3.2 percent margin of error.

In an email to Newsweek on Tuesday, YouGov's Allen Houston said in part, "Only 35% of Americans strongly or somewhat approve of how Trump is handling his job as president, while 58% disapprove, for a net job approval of -23. That's the lowest net approval Trump has received in any Economist / YouGov Poll over Trump's first or second terms as president."

With the pollster, Trump's approval rating did dip below 35 percent one time, in a November 2017 poll where it was 34 percent, Houston said.

CNN Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten, on X Tuesday: "A steady fall into the abyss for Trump's net approval, as it falls into Death Valley. He's now at a term 2 low: -18 pts. Big reason why: Independents. Trump's at -45 pts. The worst for any prez at this point in term 2. Worse than Nixon (-36 pts) at the height of Watergate!"

White House spokesman Davis Ingle, in a statement to Newsweek on Tuesday regarding the president landing new polling lows this week: "The ultimate poll was November 5th 2024 when nearly 80 million Americans overwhelmingly elected President Trump to deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda. No other President in history has accomplished more for the American people than President Trump, who is working tirelessly to create jobs, cool inflation, increase housing affordability, and more."

Ingle added, "The President has already made historic progress not only in America but around the world, and this is just the beginning as his agenda continues taking effect."
