It's likely you've heard of Stormzy, but have you heard of his personal stylist? Melissa Holdbrook-Akposoe, 34, is the British-Ghanaian fashion mastermind behind the rapper's most famous on and off stage looks. And he's not the only person featured on her star studded celebrity dressing roster: Anthony Joshua, Maya Jama and the DJ, David Guetta have all previously been her clients too.
These gigs have made her a household name among Gen Z, who refer to her via the social media handle '@melissaswardrobe'. By posting styling videos and behind the scenes shots of her glamorous job she has managed to rack up 379K Instagram followers and 4.5M likes on TikTok.
But what this social following - Naomi Campbell among them - really go wild for is her grocery hauls of what she's picked up in her local Brent Cross M&S Foodhall.
So it's no wonder M&S plucked Holdbrook-Akposoe from the supermarket aisle and pulled her towards the clothing department to be the fashion expert on Love That; a new weekly shoppable series streaming on Youtube and Instagram.
Alongside her fellow presenters Jordan North, Sian Welby and Chris Stark, she tests and reviews the latest M&S clothing drops whilst sharing her wardrobe hacks.
Its viewers can't get enough - since its launch a month ago, almost 4 million have tuned in to watch. We got a taste of Holdbrook-Akposoe's real-life dressing advice; read on for the seven ultimate fashion tips to dress by.
- DO: invest in wardrobe staples. DON'T: spend big on new trends that will pass quickly.
- DO: choose quality over quantity and wear your clothes to the max. DON'T: buy fabric that won't stand the test of time.
- DO: know your colour palette. DON'T: be scared to be bold with texture and print.
- DO: tailor your clothes.DON'T: assume one size fits all.
- DO: accessorise. DON'T: overdo it (sometimes less is more).
- DO: express your personality. DON'T: follow the crowd.
- DO: keep your wardrobe organised. DON'T: forget to do a wardrobe rotation every season.
'I'm trying to push people to create their own personal style. Trends are great, but don't be defined by them or buy into them completely. Having a capsule wardrobe is key, then you can add trending elements. Check you have a good blazer, quality jeans and elevated basics on your rail. Then throw in the season's hottest print (see polka dots, snakeskin and leopard) or popular autumnal textures in the form of a chocolate brown suede bag or a leather trench coat.'
'This is my take on sustainability. I think people understand this topic in different ways and I do it by choosing really good long-lasting, rather than recycled, fabrics and wearing what I do own on repeat. When shopping, ask yourself if this is something you will wear 10, 15, 20 times. Real leather and suede, 100% cotton, rigid denim, wool, hemp, linen and bamboo are natural and durable.'
'There are some colour trends you don't need to tap into. Butter yellow, sage green and head-to-toe red isn't for everybody. Instead, keep things interesting by using texture, prints and layering. Bright, risky primary colours can make a statement, but this alternative will effortlessly add depth to your look.'
'As a rule, I tailor absolutely everything. Tailoring can sound a little bit intimidating because you might feel you need to be more important to do it. But no! Most local dry cleaners have a tailor in house. It makes the biggest difference, especially to jeans. Nine times out of ten when you see someone in flattering denim, it’s because they’ve had it fitted. You will look that bit more put together and as though you’ve curated your whole outfit.'
'Layering is great but sometimes the last thing you put on needs to be taken off. This season I’m obsessed with chunky resin bangles - I prefer wearing three of these to stacking tons of tiny bracelets. They’re expensive looking and eye-catching.'
'You can look up to celebrities and want to copy their style, but it’s all about finding your own personal look and what works for you. Lifestyle can completely dictate your style too. What works for them might not work for you.'
'Getting dressed is much simpler when you can see exactly what you have. This is why I recommend rotating your wardrobe seasonally and packing away the pieces that aren’t in use. In this way you can also see what you’re missing and rediscover old favourites. But I always keep out items that cross over the seasons, like blazers, light jackets, boots and blouses.'
