The United States will provide nearly $1 billion more in longer-term weapons support to Ukraine, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced on Saturday. This comes as the Biden administration aims to utilize all remaining congressionally approved funds for Kyiv before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office next month.

The latest package includes additional drones and munitions for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) previously supplied by the U.S. These urgently needed weapons will be funded through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which finances long-term systems contracts.

"The assistance is crucial now but also looks towards future needs," said a defense official familiar with the plan.

While immediate weaponry is critical, this initiative focuses on ensuring sustained military aid and system enhancements over time. The goal is to maintain robust support for Ukraine amid ongoing challenges while preparing for potential shifts in U.S. foreign policy under new leadership.
