Visitors to Gatwick Airport almost 60 years ago must have got a bit of a shock when the Tardis from Doctor Who landed on the runway.

Exterior scenes for The Faceless Ones, starring Patrick Troughton as the second incarnation of The Doctor, were filmed at the West Sussex airport between 10 and 17 March 1967.

The airport was the main setting for the plot, which involved a race of aliens, known as Chameleons, stealing the identities of passengers and crew.

Anneke Wills, who played companion Polly, said: "Can you imagine them allowing Doctor Who to film at Gatwick Airport now?"

The Faceless Ones was broadcast over six episodes in April and May 1967.

The BBC crew filmed in Air Courier's Apron (where the planes stand), the passenger concourse and the main car park.

It featured Patrick Troughton in one of his early appearances as the second incarnation of The Doctor alongside companions Polly (Anneke Wills), Ben (Michael Craze) and Jamie (Frazer Hines).

Wills, who had also appeared with First Doctor William Hartnell, made her final appearance in the series during the Gatwick filming.

She said: "I remember being very emotional there on the tarmac.
"You could see it on our faces. It was very sad."
She added: "I remember most clearly what I was wearing - a beautiful Gerald McCann suit with nice boots. It was the swinging sixties."
"I remember how draughty it was - it was freezing on the tarmac."

Richard Bignell, Doctor Who historian, said: "The original plan was to go to Heathrow, but ultimately, the charges being imposed became too high, so logically, they then turned to Gatwick, who were only too happy to help."

Mr Bignell, author of the book Doctor Who On Location, said this was only the second time in the programme's history that an alien invasion had occurred in a contemporary setting.

He added: "It's difficult to know what the BBC would have done if both Heathrow and Gatwick were unavailable.

"No doubt they would have had to look at either Luton or Stansted - perhaps more affordable, but maybe not as impressive."

The fee for filming at the airport amounted to £190 to the BAA and £252 to Air Couriers Ltd, according to BBC paperwork.

Only two of the six episodes of The Faceless Ones remain in the BBC archive; the rest were wiped in the 1970s.

An animated version of the adventure was released in 2020.
