In the years since the show ended, ANTM and its host, Tyra Banks, have faced backlash as contestants have shared their negative experiences filming.
America's Next Top Model launched the careers of 24 winners since its 2003 premiere, but coming out on top wasn't always easy.
In her new book, You Wanna Be on Top?: A Memoir of Makeovers, Manipulation, and Not Becoming America's Next Top Model, cycle 9 contestant Sarah Hartshorne shares the darker side of competing on the series, which was hosted by former supermodel Tyra Banks.
Over the show's 15-year run, the reality competition series put aspiring models through a series of photoshoots and other challenges to become America's next top model. Along with the title, winnings typically included a modeling contract and a magazine spread.
The series, which was categorized by "cycles" rather than seasons, originated on UPN in 2003 before moving to The CW in 2006. VH1 aired the series from 2016 to 2018. As it progressed, America's Next Top Model (also known as ANTM or Top Model) began featuring plus-size, petite and male models.
The majority of winners received steady modeling work after the show, and some eventually parlayed their newfound fame into other endeavors, including hosting or acting -- while some have stepped out of the spotlight completely.
In 2007, Curry spoke negatively about her experience on ANTM in a MySpace blog post, per TMZ. She claimed that the contestants faced poor working conditions and that the Revlon campaign advertised as part of her winnings "turned out to be only a day's work at a convention."

These days, Curry leads a quiet life in Montana with her husband Matthew Rhode, whom she married in 2018. And while her ANTM wasn't ideal, the now 42-year-old is happy things happened the way they did.
"I'm grateful that things didn't pan out the way they were supposed to because I don't think I would be a very good person if I had found major success in modeling," she told PEOPLE in July 2024. "I just don't think my young brain would've been able to wrap itself around that in a good way."
Despite her claim to modeling fame, Curry said she just tries to "lay low" in her post-ANTM life in a video she shared on Instagram nearly a year later.
"I try to not wear makeup, try to just be normal, and people will look at me and be like, 'Nah, nah, that ain't her,' " she said.
