For decades, the humble coffee maker has been a familiar sight in hotel rooms across the country.

But after one influencer's viral revelation, it appears they could be on their way out.

Tara Woodcox, an influencer and fitness coach, made headlines after claiming you could wash your underwear in a hotel coffee machine - by placing it where the coffee filter would go and running hot water through it.

She even suggested drying the underwear with a hairdryer.

While she described it as the 'coolest trick', viewers quickly expressed their disgust, branding the hack 'nasty', 'inconsiderate' and a 'health code violation'.

One commenter wrote on X: 'Just wow. And if you are in a hotel room, you also have access to a sink, a tub, and hot and cold water.
'They even provide soap if you didn't pack it. But the coffee maker was your main go-to? You should be charged or fined at the very least. That's really messed up!'

The backlash has been so strong that some users have even speculated hotels are removing coffee makers altogether.

A TikTok user shared a video showing dozens of coffee machines at their local Goodwill store, joking: 'Y'all, what hotel has donated every single one of their coffee makers to my Goodwill?'

The user continued: 'After the hotel underwear coffee maker-gate. I'm dying.'

On X, another user also suggested the two events could be linked, writing: 'A woman walks into Goodwill... and immediately stops.

'Entire shelves packed with identical hotel coffee machines. Same model. Same color.

'Dozens of them. All dumped at once. Like they were pulled straight out of hotel rooms overnight.'

Echoing wider concerns, the user added: 'Those machines aren't monitored. They're not deep-cleaned between guests. They go from person to person... room to room.'

Woodcox later appeared to laugh off the backlash, insisting in a follow-up TikTok video that she had never actually washed her underwear in a hotel coffee maker.

Instead, she claimed the original post was meant as a warning.

'I've never actually done that,' she said, laughing. When asked why she shared the idea, she replied: 'Because I've heard it from a friend before - she's a flight attendant. People do that.'

She added: 'It was something that I posted as a reason why you shouldn't use the coffee pot. I learned that from a friend and I was like, 'Ew.'

It is not the first time hotel coffee makers have been criticized for hygiene concerns.

An investigation by ABC News found that some cleaners simply rinsed machines with water rather than properly sanitizing them, potentially allowing bacteria to build up.

In one case, a cleaner in Cincinnati, Ohio, was seen using a bottle of mildew remover on a coffee pot, while another used the same cloth to clean both the coffee machine and the bathroom floor.

Experts advise guests to clean hotel coffee makers before use - even if they appear spotless.
