A woman on TikTok has gone viral after ignoring her husband's warning about feeding a squirrel in their backyard -- only to discover he may have been right.
The video, posted by user @hiitsmepebbles, has gained more than 7 million views and nearly 779,000 likes at the time of writing, as viewers watched the unexpected consequences unfold.
The clip opens with text overlay quoting her husband's caution: "Don't give that squirrel nuts or she'll never go away." Despite the warning, the woman offers the squirrel food anyway. What follows is a series of scenes showing the animal making itself increasingly comfortable around their home.
In the footage, the squirrel sprawls across the couple's outdoor seating as though it owns the place. It peers through their window, appearing to wait expectantly for more snacks.
The animal's boldness and persistence quickly became the highlight of the video, prompting thousands of amused reactions from TikTok users who have had similar encounters.
While the situation is undeniably entertaining, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service advises against feeding wild animals for several important reasons.
According to the agency, wild animals have specialized diets that have evolved over time. Each species relies on foods found naturally in its environment, and human or pet foods do not meet their nutritional needs. Feeding wildlife the wrong foods can lead to malnutrition, illness, or increased vulnerability to predators. Even if an animal appears capable of eating pet food, it remains unsafe and inappropriate for wildlife.
The agency also notes that wild animals are not adapted to packaged foods. Human and pet foods often come in wrappers made of plastic, foil, or paper -- materials that do not exist in nature. Animals may accidentally ingest these materials, leading to sickness or injury.
Another concern is that feeding wildlife reduces their natural fear of people. Animals that learn to associate humans with food can become overly comfortable around homes and neighborhoods. Over time, this can lead to bold or even aggressive behavior, creating risks for both people and wildlife.
Finally, feeding wild animals increases the risk of disease transmission. Close contact with wildlife can expose humans and pets to illnesses such as rabies or hantavirus. Avoiding direct interaction helps protect both animals and people.
The viral post has generated more than 4,000 comments, many from users sharing their own stories of overly friendly backyard visitors.
One user wrote, "I don't understand why people do not like squirrels. They are so cute."
