Mother Describes Bathroom Renovation Struggles for Daughter with Cerebral Palsy
The mother of a woman with cerebral palsy has shared her frustrations over a failed bathroom renovation. Lynn Hoare, 64, from South Benfleet, Essex, explains the issues they are facing after their wet room, intended for her daughter Krista, became unusable due to severe damp and faulty flooring.
Lynn, a part-time support worker, initially opted for a budget-friendly renovation after buying a £300,000 bungalow in July 2019. She hired a builder recommended by her partner, but by 2023, the wet room was in a dire state.
Current Situation- Carers are washing Krista's hair in the sink due to the wet room's condition.
- Lynn and Krista are both struggling with personal hygiene due to lack of proper facilities.
Despite attempts to contact the builder, Lynn has been unable to get a response and is relying on her son Jason, 33, and ex-husband Steve, 66, to handle repairs. To support these efforts, Lynn has initiated a GoFundMe campaign targeting £3,500.
Kris's Challenges
Krista, who uses a wheelchair due to quadriplegic cerebral palsy, finds the situation particularly challenging. Lynn explains: "Krista is really frustrated over it, we all are."
Details of the Renovation
Lynn paid £3,000 for the conversion of their sole bathroom into a wet room. The builder used polystyrene beneath the floorboards, causing improper drainage and sealing issues. As a result, the floor moves, allowing water to seep into the floorboards.
Lynn recounts her shock upon discovering these shortcuts, saying, "I just couldn't believe the builder used polystyrene to cut corners."
Her family has already spent £300 on material for initial repairs, but more is needed to fully restore the bathroom.
Reflecting on the situation, Lynn mentions that in hindsight, she wouldn't hire someone based on cost-saving promises alone, although she trusted the builder at the time.
