The world's favorite children's toy just got even more fun.

Lego has just unveiled a totally new kind of brick that looks just like a classic 2x4 piece, but contains a tiny computer.

Dubbed Smart Bricks, the new pieces are designed to bring Lego sets to life. They contain so-called near-field communication or NFC chips like those used in credit cards, transit passes, car fobs and hotel room keys.

When placed near other Lego products with NFC, such as tiles, minifigures, or other Smart Bricks, they can trigger lights, sounds, and music -- from humming lightsabers and roaring engines to blaster fire and Star Wars soundtracks.

The technology was unveiled at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as part of Lego's broader Smart Play initiative.

They differ from earlier electronic Lego products, such as the Lego Mario sets that reacted only to colors or barcodes and needed to have their batteries regularly replaced. Multiple Smart Bricks can be wirelessly charged at the same time.

Each Smart Brick has lights and sounds plus motion and tilt sensors. And they can form a Bluetooth network that allows sets to talk to each other and react dynamically as children play.

It means cars can trigger crash sounds or finish-line effects, while spaceships can battle and play music when arranged in specific ways.

On March 1, 2026, The Lego Group will begin rolling out a brand new kind of brick

Lego says that when it detects NFC-enabled Lego tiles, minifigures, or other Smart Bricks nearby, it can bring entire Lego sets to life

The Smart Bricks have lights, sounds, motion and tilt sensors, and form a Bluetooth network to interact with each other

While these tiny building blocks will look just like a classic 2x4 Lego piece, they will actually contain tiny computers

Each brick has a tiny updatable chip and a microphone that also acts as a sensor, not a recorder. There's no AI or camera, so they don't work with Lego Mario tiles.

The first three sets, shipping March 1, will all be Lego Star Wars.

One is a $70, 473-piece Darth Vader's fighter set with one smart brick, a smart tag, and a Darth Vader smart figure.

The second is a $100, 584-piece 'Luke's Red Five X-Wing' set with one smart brick, five tags, and both Luke and Leia smart figures.

Lastly is a $160, 962-piece 'Darth Vader's Throne Room Duel & A-Wing' set with two smart bricks, three figures, and five tags.

The Lego Group is calling the new computer bricks 'the most significant evolution in the Lego System-in-Play since the introduction of the Lego Minifigure in 1978'.

'Lego Smart Play will continue to expand through new updates, launches and technology,' the company said.

There are unconfirmed rumors that the upcoming Lego Pokémon sets will be the next to get the upgrade, according to the Verge.

Lego, founded by Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1932, is currently available in 130 countries and is widely considered one of the most popular toys worldwide.
