One of Netflix's most popular sci-fi series is drastically reducing the amount of episodes in upcoming seasons.
"3 Body Problem," created by "Game of Thrones" showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss alongside Alexander Woo, is set to have fewer episodes in both season 2 and season 3.
The confirmation came through a behind-the-scenes photo shared by a member of the production crew on Instagram. It shows a clapper denoting the final episode count of season 2, which is expressed as '206'. Or, in other words, season 2, episode 6.
There are even reports the show, an adaptation of the Chinese novel series Remembrance of Earth's Past by former computer engineer Liu Cixin that get its name after a classical physics problem dealing with Newton's laws of motion and gravitation, will contain just five episodes in season 3.
That's compared to the first season, released on Netflix on March 21, 2024, which has eight episodes. Understandably, fans have some serious reservations about the plans.
Over on the show's subreddit, user ManLandragoran writes, "Only six? JUST 6? I'm kind of worried. Is that enough?"
Igessidkanything writes, "Damn this is concerning, how can they tell everything in 6 episodes? Maybe longer episodes?"
AndreZB2000 writes, "dark forest is the book with the least expendable content in it. this isnt good"
There may be a few solid reasons behind the lowered episode count; however. Renewed for both seasons 2 and 3 in May, which are being filmed back-to-back, the show is aiming to tell a complete, cohesive story with an ending in mind.
Season 2 adapts the second book in the series, "The Dark Forest," while season 3 tackles the third, "Death's End."
Why are There Fewer Episodes in '3 Body Problem' Season 2 and 3?
"3 Body Problem" executive producers Weiss, Benioff and Woo told Tudum, "We included a lot of what we loved from the [novels by Cixin Liu] in Season 1, but the vast majority of reasons we wanted to make this show are in Season 2. We always wanted to get to the final page of the third book, and it's really, really thrilling to us that we will get to do just that."
They continued, "The tone really changes once you get to the second season," "It's much bigger. Things get wilder; the conflicts get more cosmic. Once people see it on the screen, they're going to understand why we've been so excited for this season, in particular."
"Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu's magnificent trilogy, we hoped we'd be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!"
The second and third seasons of "Three Body Problem" may have less episodes and a condensed story, but what's there should hopefully wrap up into a satisfying arc.
