Horror fans shared their fears of suffering 'nightmares for weeks' after a trailer dropped for a new film based on an unnerving urban legend.

Inspired by a 4Chan post, Backrooms follows a furniture store owner named Clark, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The trailer - which has racked up over 18 million views on YouTube - shows Clark discovering a backroom in his shop that he had been unaware of.

Upon investigating with his friends, Clark also opens up to his therapist about the unusual rooms, as they multiply and break the laws of physics.

In an effort to prove the rooms' existence, Clark and his friends attempt to video tape their findings.

Although things soon take a turn for the worst after discovering something dangerous living within the space.

Taking to the comments section, viewers soon shared their unease after watching the trailer.

One wrote: 'Bro I will have many nightmares of this but it will be worth it.'
Another added: 'I'm going to have nightmares for weeks, it's gna be awesome.'
A third penned: 'The fact that they are not only keeping the VHS aesthetic, but also the soundtrack from the webseries tells me this is going to be pure peak.'

Psychological sci-fi horror Backrooms is based upon the semi-anthological web series of the same name by Kane Parsons.

Parsons wrote, produced and directed the original iteration, while also returning to direct the movie.

In addition to Oscar nominee Chiwetel, 48, the cast also includes Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Renate Reinsve, Avan Jogia and Lukita Maxwell.

The premise was inspired by a 2019 post on the infamous forum 4Chan - namely, its paranormal-themed board /x/.
