Married At First Sight bride Melissa Akbay was blasted by the show's relationship expert during Sunday night's explosive episode.

The high-maintenance bride was slammed over her unrealistic romantic expectations when it comes to her husband.

Melissa, 28, and her groom Luke Fourniotis, 30, were appearing at this year's first Commitment Ceremony, where she complained that her romance was not the 'fairy tale' she imagined it to be.

'I really did want my fairy tale and to feel that spark, but I just couldn't feel it with Luke,' Melissa told experts John Aiken, Mel Schilling and Alessandra Rampolla.

However, John Aiken was having none of it and bluntly told the communications specialist that relationships take a lot of effort from both parties to be successful.

'You need a wake-up call. MAFS isn't about "fairy tales". It's real relationships, real work, real challenges,' John told her.

A disheartened Luke then told the experts that his wife's behaviour had 'knocked his confidence' and made him question what he was doing wrong.

'I was excited to get to know someone and have fun with them. I really tried to do whatever I could, I gave it my best shot,' a teary-eyed Luke said.

In a surprising move, Luke then voted to 'stay' on the show and give their relationship some more effort, while Melissa voted to leave.

As their decision was not unanimous, the pair will be staying on the show for at least another week.

Expert John Aiken was having none of it and bluntly told the communications specialist that relationships take a lot of effort from both parties to be successful.

'You need a wake-up call. MAFS isn't about "fairy tales". It's real relationships, real work, real challenges,' John told her.

John then gave some expert parting advice for the struggling couple.

'You've got a week now to find out why Luke is compatible. There's no pressure, have fun, enjoy each other's company and get to know one another,' John told them.

Things got off to a very rocky start on MAFS for Melissa and Luke with the groom arriving late to their wedding after he forgot the rings.

He also gave Melissa the 'ick' from the outset, chewing gum while his bride recited her vows.

Their Louth Island honeymoon did little to warm her heart either, with the bride forcing Luke to sleep on the couch.

She also expressed a distinct lack of interest in her betrothed to the other brides at the first dinner party.

If that wasn't enough, she also crushed Luke even further during a recent photo ranking challenge, where she placed him second behind Grayson McIvor.

A heartbroken Luke told producers it was difficult to process Mel's shock decision.

'That just knocks me down further, to be honest. Right now I feel massively under-confident,' he said.

John bluntly told Melissa that she didn't appear to be trying very hard to make her relationship with Luke work.

The other brides and grooms were stunned by the exchange.

He later told Daily Mail that he was shocked by Mel's actions as they had weakened the relationship.

'Being the only groom not ranked first wasn't easy,' he said.

'If you're in a relationship, you want to make the other person feel secure. Ranking someone first is such an easy way to do that.'

Luke admitted that even if Melissa privately felt he wasn't her number one, the public rejection stung.

'Even if you think I'm second or third, it doesn’t hurt to put me first,' he said. 'It just makes someone feel liked, feel secure. That didn’t happen.'

But Luke insists the ranking itself wasn’t the biggest blow.

‘The main thing was she didn’t even let me in as a friend,’ he said.

‘This experiment would have been so much more enjoyable for both of us if we could have just been friends.’
