PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Athletics beat the Padres 7-2 on Monday at Peoria Stadium.
Batter's box: Gavin Sheets' single leading off the bottom of the fifth inning drew a hearty cheer from the crowd, as it was the Padres' first hit of the game. Sheets also walked once in his four plate appearances. ... Sung-Mun Song grounded a 98 mph fastball from Luis Medina up the middle for his third hit of the spring. Song's biggest transition to the major leagues after nine seasons playing in Korea is expected to be catching up to velocity, and he has cut down on his leg kick to help his timing. His first hit of the spring was on a 97 mph fastball. ... Nick Castellanos had his second 11-pitch at-bat of the spring. After hitting a double on Feb. 24, he grounded into a double play this time. But that was one pitch after third base umpire Pete Talkington robbed Castellanos of a double by calling "foul" on a ball that clearly landed in fair territory in front of the wall in left field. ... Ty France, in camp as a non-roster invitee, walked in his only plate appearance. He has a .471 on-base percentage this spring (5-for-14, two walks, one hit by pitch). ... Outfielder Jase Bowen, who made it to Triple-A for the first time last season, homered in the ninth inning off Nick Hernandez. Bowen is 6-for-17 and also has two doubles this spring. ... Minor leaguers Clay Dungan and Francisco Acuña (double) had the Padres' other hits.
Balls and strikes: Michael King continued to get stretched out in his second Cactus League start, though he needed the liberal spring training allowance of a starting pitcher being able to return to a game after being removed. King struggled with his command and was pulled after allowing his fourth hit with two outs in the second inning. The right-hander threw 22 pitches in the first inning, just 10 of them strikes. That is also when he allowed Tyler Soderstrom's two-run homer. A two-run single by Shea Langaliers drove King from the game in the second inning. He departed for good after getting a double play grounder in the third inning, having thrown a total of 57 pitches (32 strikes). ... Logan Gillaspie, pitching for the first time this spring after missing a few days earlier in camp for the birth of his first child, worked 2⅔ innings without allowing a baserunner. ... Jagger Haynes, a hard-throwing 23-year-old left-handed starter who could end up pitching in the major leagues later in the season, worked a 1-2-3 inning. He has allowed two runs in four innings this spring. ... Jackson Wolf, who has spent most of the past two seasons at Triple-A after making his lone MLB start in 2023, worked a scoreless ninth inning and has not allowed a run in his past three appearances (3⅓ innings).
Extra bases: Leo De Vries, the Padres' No.1 prospect until he was dealt as part of the Mason Miller trade last July, started at shortstop for the Athletics. He singled twice in his four at-bats. The 19-year-old De Vries is expected to begin the season in Double-A. ... Castellanos started at first base and had the kind of action-packed day the Padres want him to have as he learns a new position. Castellanos made a good throw to second base to start a double play and another one to complete a pick-off caught stealing. He did leave the bag unattended when he fielded a grounder hit to the second baseman. ... Miguel Andujar, who has played at first base and third base and served as designated hitter, got his first game action of the spring in left field. He made a nice throw trying to get a runner going first to third.
On deck: Right-hander Nick Pivetta, the Padres' presumptive opening-day starter, is scheduled to make his second start of the spring, 12:05 p.m. PT Tuesday against the White Sox in Phoenix.
