This is the shocking moment a pensioner was brutally attacked on his own driveway by a masked thug with a wooden plank.

CCTV footage shows Joe Storer, 74, being struck in the face while he checked his bins outside his home in Derby.

Mr Storer opens the main gate before a man, dressed in black and wearing a ski mask, charges at him with a plank of wood riddled with nails.

The pensioner was hit once in the face before the man dropped the plank and fled the scene at around 6.30am on March 10.

The footage shows Mr Storer clutching his face as he rushes to get back inside.

'At the corner of my eye I saw somebody,' he said.
'He rushed at me so I turned away, and he hit me from behind on my face and neck. He then dropped a piece of wood and ran off.
'I picked up the piece of wood up, told him to come back, and I called him a coward for doing what he did.'

A man in his 50s has been arrested in connection with the incident with Derbyshire Police continuing to appeal for witnesses.

His wife, Helen Storer, said: 'My husband came back in the house bleeding around his mouth and said that he had been attacked. He wouldn't stop bleeding.

'We phoned 999 and asked for police to report it and then Joe had to go to A&E.'

Mr Storer said: 'I go to my garage in the morning and I'm looking over my shoulder all the time.

'I'm quite fit, but I am worried because I still am a 74-year-old pensioner with a heart condition.

'I worry what could happen next. Is it a knife attack or is it petrol through the letter box? You simply don’t know.

'We dialled 999 and they said someone will be out. But no one was out and nobody phoned back. We only got an email.'

Inspector Mat Winterbottom, who leads policing in Amber Valley, said: 'The assault suffered by this victim is shocking; being attacked at your home in this way will have had a significant impact both physically and emotionally.

'I would like to apologise for the lack of contact that he has received, and the sergeant for the area has been in touch directly to make that apology and update him on the status of the investigation.

'Our enquiries are ongoing, including a CCTV trawl of the area, and I would urge anyone with any information to come forward and help us identify the person responsible.'

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said: 'We are appealing for witnesses to an assault of a pensioner in South Normanton.

'The incident occurred at 6.40am on Tuesday 10 March in Bryant Lane, South Normanton, and saw a man in his 70s attacked.

'The suspect, who was around 5ft 10ins tall and of slim build, left the scene towards the footpath that leads to Lea Vale.
