He's an acclaimed director in his own right, but Sylvester Stallone is reportedly collaborating with another heavy hitter on a new project.

The 79-year-old actor and filmmaker is said to be working on an upcoming series with acclaimed auteur Quentin Tarantino, 62, TMZ reported on Friday.

Although Stallone -- who recently paid tribute to his late Expendables costar Chuck Norris -- has earned a new wave of fans thanks to his work in Taylor Sheridan's series Tulsa King in recent years, Tarantino would be the most high-profile director he has worked with in the years since Ryan Coogler directed him to an Oscar nomination in 2015's Creed.

However, Stallone reportedly won't be acting in the new series, but instead will be behind the camera.

Sources said to have direct knowledge of the series said it is a period piece set in the 1930s, which would also be a stark departure from the low-budget video-on-demand action films Stallone has appeared in over the past decade.

The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Stallone and Tarantino for comment.

According to the sources, the filmmakers plan to go all out to achieve the period feel.

They allegedly plan to shoot the series in black and white, and will supposedly be using cameras dating to the era for a less crisp, vintage film texture.

The apparent devotion to classic film production isn't surprising for Tarantino, who has continued to shoot his features on film, rather than making the switch to digital.

He is even the owner of two movie theaters in Los Angeles, the New Beverly and the Vista, which almost exclusively project movies on film.

According to TMZ, Stallone and Tarantino's new series will feature organized crime and showgirls, along with music from the era.

Boxing is also said to play a part in the story, which would be fitting for a project involving the former Rocky actor.

The show is reportedly a limited series that will only feature six episodes.

Stallone is said to be staying behind the camera, but it's unclear if he will be directing the project or if he is serving in another capacity, such as writing or producing.

Tarantino's role also hasn't been clearly stated. The Kill Bill director would make sense as a producer alongside Stallone, but he's also known for the verbal gymnastics of his screenplays.

Tarantino is also a veteran of multiple crime films, particularly his early masterpieces Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, so the alleged Depression-set series could be a perfect fit for him as a screenwriter.

Although Tarantino got his start making films set in the present, he has turned to period films in recent years, including Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

His 2009 World War II thriller Inglourious Basterds even took place close to the time his alleged collaboration with Stallone would take place.

Early in his career, Stallone also appeared in a small supporting role in the '30s-set gangster film Capone (1975).

In January, Stallone shared a video to Instagram in which he showed off his rippling biceps before a workout, but his followers couldn't believe that he was still so spry at his age.
