Passengers have been injured and commuters' journeys were thrown into chaos after a Nottinghamshire tram and a bus crashed this morning.

Dramatic pictures show the extent of the crash that derailed the tram in Chilwell.

The collision happened during rush hour this morning, at around 9am, near the Inham Road tram stop.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said some passengers were injured but that none of the injuries were life-altering.

The ambulance service said one passenger was taken to hospital.

Significant delays were affecting both the tram and bus networks while the incident was being resolved.

The Fire Brigade added that the road remained closed while the incident was being cleared and that the area should be avoided.

Police added that Inham Road was likely to be closed for the rest of the day.

Pictures from the scene show extensive damage to both vehicles, with the front of the Nottingham City Transport (NCT) Orange 36 bus completely smashed.

The Hucknall-bound tram derailed onto a nearby green space and is seen with damage to its left and front side.

Sergeant Nicola Thomas, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: 'While the incident has caused disruption this morning, there have been no reports of any serious injuries and the scene is now being made safe.
'Inham Road is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day while investigations and recovery of the vehicles take place.
'Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes.
'I'd like to thank people affected for their understanding.'
A spokesman for the East Midlands Ambulance Service said: 'We received a call at 9.03am on Thursday 19 February to Inham Road in Beeston.
'The caller reported that there had been a road traffic collision. We sent two ambulances, three paramedics in solo response cars, and the Hazardous Area Response Team.
'We took one patient to hospital via ambulance, and all our resources have since left the scene.'
