Scottie Scheffler's caddie Ted Scott has spoken out for the first time about the horrifying family emergency that saw him quit the St. Jude Classic mid-tournament.

Scott is the regular bag-man for the world No. 1 but he unexpectedly quit before the final round of a recent tournament, and then missed the entirety of the next one after having to rush back home to Louisiana.

No further information was shared by either Scott or Scheffler at the time, but now the caddie has opened up on what happened, and to who.

'Many of you know that I left the St. Jude Classic early and didn't caddie on Sunday. Why? Because we have a devastating family emergency,' Scott said in a video posted to Instagram from East Lake Golf Club.
'Probably the hardest thing I've ever walked through in life,' he added. 'First of all, we're helpless.
'I truly can't help the situation. Watching my family grieve, watching the person injured, it's just really difficult to go through, and I'm helpless.'

Ted Scott was back alongside Scottie Scheffler for the Tour Championship this weekend.

Scott (L) rushed home after his 10-year-old nephew suffered a serious, but unspecified, injury.

'I can't understand what happened, I can't understand what's going on, but I'm starting to find peace. So many of you have reached out to me, so many family members, so many friends on the Tour have supported me so well through this and it's helping give me peace.'

The only details known so far are that the injury was sustained by Scott's 10-year-old nephew Joel, but it is unclear how it happened, or the severity of the injury.

All players in Sunday's Tour Championship wore yellow ribbons on their caps in support of Joel, and Scheffler then spoke out about the gesture - and his caddie - after his final round.

'Just a little way to show our support back home,' Scheffler said on NBC. 'Ted wanted to come back to work this week. We had some fun out there. ... (The ribbon is) just a little way to Joel to know we're thinking of him.'

While Scott was away, fill-in caddie and PGA Tour chaplain Brad Payne stepped in to replace him at the St. Jude, and Michael Cromie served as Scheffler’s caddie at the BMW Championship last week.

Scheffler didn't miss a beat with Cromie on the bag, as the world's top-ranked golfer recorded his fifth victory of the season, a two-stroke win at Owings Mills.

Scott has caddied for 17 of Scheffler's 18 PGA Tour titles, including all four majors.
