The birth of a new baby is memorable for all parents - but one newborn's delivery in an upstate New York hospital will be unforgettable for all involved.

Cayuga Medical Center Birthplace in northwest Ithaca, New York, had a record-breaking day in January when they delivered the largest newborn in the hospital's history.

Parents Terrica and Shawn welcomed their son, Shawn Jr., on January 30, weighing a whopping 13 pounds and making him the largest baby ever born at the hospital.

'We knew he'd be bigger, but we didn't expect this,' the mom-of-four said in a statement.

The mom, who also has two sons and a daughter, said the baby is already wearing three- to six-month diapers and clothes rather than newborn sizes.

She said: 'It feels like I skipped straight to having a three-month-old.'

Just hours later, parents Chloe and Victor welcomed a baby on the opposite spectrum, with baby Margot weighing in at a tiny four pounds.

Mom Chloe said the experience with the hospital was 'really charming.'

'[It was] such a good reminder that babies come in all shapes and sizes,' the doting mom said.
'I'm feeling great and so thankful for the care we received from the doctors, nurses, and midwives.'

'Their shared birthday was a sweet reminder that babies truly come in all shapes and sizes, and Cayuga Medical Center's team is prepared to care for every unique birth story with skill and compassion,' the hospital wrote in a post shared to Facebook.

On average, a newborn baby weighs between seven and seven-and-a-half pounds.

Last year in July, doctors helped Tennessee mom Shelby Martin deliver her 13-pound son.

Speaking to People about the birth, Martin said that she'd dreamed of having a vaginal delivery and that immediate skin-to-skin contact right after birth was hugely important to her.

But, because of the baby's enormous size, doctors informed her that it was much wiser to have a cesarean section.

'There was a real risk he could get stuck during delivery. That changed everything,' she explained.

'I knew the safest choice was a C-section, and thankfully, I had an amazing OBGYN and care team at TriStar Centennial who I trusted completely.'

The mom, who already had three children before welcoming Cassian, was told during her pregnancy that her fourth was going to be on the larger size.

'We had a heads-up that he was going to be big, but I would have never guessed almost 13 pounds,' she said.

'Looking back on bump pictures, I probably should have known,' she reflected.

In a separate interview, Martin admitted that she 'didn't think she would survive' her pregnancy as he was 'essentially popping my hip joint out of socket.'

Luckily, the baby was delivered safely.
