Allow me to introduce you to spring's It jacket: the funnel neck. We have Phoebe Philo to thank for the resurgent popularity of this particular cut of coat. When she launched her namesake brand back in 2023, she did so with a leather funnel-neck jacket.

Other designers soon muscled in on the action: Stella McCartney sent a white funnel-neck trench down the catwalk, while at Chloe, Chemena Kamali's funnel-neck utility jackets had playful puff sleeves. A-listers such as Victoria Beckham are firm fans, too. And the trickle-down effect means they've now reached the high street - searches on John Lewis for 'funnel neck' are up 1,000% year on year.

So, how to pick the funnel that will flatter you most? I've trawled the rails to pick the 12 best, ranging from suede to denim and starting from just £22.

POLKA DOT

You may think of polka dots as a print for floaty summer dresses, but this season spotted jackets are everywhere. TU's yellow funnel-neck bomber jacket (£30) is a bold and purse-friendly update for spring. Or, if you prefer your outerwear in a more neutral palette, try Mango's chocolate-brown spotted denim bomber (£79.99). There are matching balloon jeans to complete the look, too.

COOL NEUTRALS

While there are plenty of interesting designs and bold pops of colour on offer, you can never go wrong with a neutral jacket. Easy to wear and a failsafe with most outfits, these shorter designs are a great alternative to a trench. Phoebe Philo is the queen of the look. Her cotton high-neck jacket, which comes with a price tag of £1,900 shall remain eternally on my wish list but will never grace my wardrobe. Instead, I’ve found the next best thing at Marks & Spencer. Their cotton-rich, satin-look bomber jacket (£65) gives you high-end style on a budget.

EARTHY COLOUR

I’ve decided it’s time for an upgrade to my beloved khaki canvas jacket - something a bit more sophisticated, yet still casual. I was inspired by Chloé’s gathered cropped jacket, so was thrilled to find this version (£62) at Next. The terracotta colourway gives it a grown-up boho feel and it’s the perfect length to wear over dresses or trousers.

DARING DENIM

As soon as the weather starts to improve, many people make the simple swap from a puffer jacket or wool trench to a denim jacket. But denim jackets rarely have real oomph. Still, if you’re resolutely on team denim, try a jacket with a funnel neck this spring. Primark’s boxier silhouette is a steal at £22. For extra style points, double up your denim and wear with a pair of wide or barrel leg jeans. For those who love a light wash denim, then Matalan’s soft utility style (£35) is perfect for you; the elasticated hem and cuffs make layering easy too.

SUEDE OR LEATHER

Suede jackets come in many shapes and forms - from structured blazers to tasselled designs, and now funnel necks. AllSaints has taken inspiration from its archives with this cognac-brown jacket. The oversized pockets and drawcord hem add a stylish touch. At £479, I know this is a serious investment piece, but it’s near impossible to find high-quality, cheap suede. If you look after this jacket, it should last you for life. For those who prefer lighter tones, Reserved’s leather jacket is excellent value at £139.99.

BELTED

Short boxy jackets are great for spring but if you prefer your coats to be sweeping you can go for a belted funnel neck. Cinch at the waist to create a more streamlined silhouette or leave loose on warmer days. New Look’s sellout faux leather design in a dark burgundy looks far pricier than its £69.99 price tag. If you prefer a classic trench, then Because of Alice’s sage style (£130) has a cool grown-up feel to it.
