The White House has been sharing cryptic posts on social media, and internet sleuths have theories on what it's all about.
In recent days, the official White House X account has posted blurred images and cryptic videos online, with one showing a black screen, a sketch of the White House, and the words "President Donald J Trump," along with an indecipherable voice which, played backwards, appears to say: "Exciting announcement tomorrow."
The page has also posted heavily pixelated images appearing to show Trump and Vice President JD Vance, and previously posted a shaky video with a woman's voice being heard saying: "It's launching soon, right?" and a man answering: "Yes."
On one pixelated image seemingly showing the president posted to X, Kaelan Dorr, deputy assistant to the president and White House deputy communications director, reacted with an eye emoji and an emoji resembling a purple monster or alien.
The White House has not given any official explanation for the posts, but, naturally, the internet is in a tizzy trying to decipher what it might mean -- so here are three popular theories. Newsweek has contacted The White House for comment on this story.
Some stargazers are hoping the announcement is to reveal the existence of extraterrestrial life, with X user @iamufohunter sharing one cryptic White House clip and asking: "Is it about alien disclosure?"
Earlier in March, the government added a new domain name -- Aliens.gov -- to the federal government official website registry, leading some to hope that Trump would be making some sort of announcement about the proof of life outside of our planet.
The website is not yet live, but has been reserved by the government for a future, as-yet-unknown reason. Trump had previously posted on Truth Social that he would "begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs)."
However, others pointed out that the use of the word aliens could also refer to those illegally residing in the United States.
Along with the pixelated and cryptic posts, the government has also launched the landing page to a new website: freedom.gov.
It features a semi-pixelated animated cowboy with the words: "Freedom is coming. Information is power. Reclaim your human right to free expression. Get ready."
It comes after a February report from Reuters that the U.S. planned to launch an online portal to allow people in Europe and elsewhere to see content banned by their own governments, such as alleged terrorist propaganda and hate speech.
It reported at the time that the website would be called freedom.gov, and that officials had discussed hosting a VPN to make it appear as though the user is browsing from the U.S.
Online commenters suggested that the pixelated images could be referencing the new website, with user @joshuareid writing: "Freedom.gov launch? Seeing through the censorship and static?"
User @icu_luci agreed: "This is the same effect that you see at freedom(.)gov, which I've been saying is what they're hinting at since they started."
Some internet sleuths believe the White House's cryptic pixelated images and videos could be a reference to Trump's new phone service -- and the T1 phone.
Trump and his son, Eric Trump, unveiled T1 Mobile in June 2025, offering a subscription for $47.45 per month under "The 47 Plan."
The company has since unveiled the gold-colored T1 phone, retailing at a price of $499, which according to the website will launch later in 2026.
Some commenters believe the cryptic posts are about the launch of the T1 phone, with some believing that all the pixelated images show the president and vice president using a mobile phone.
"I think this is all about the release of Trump's phone. Hope not," user @SleazyWeez wrote, as @TNGormie predicted: "It's gonna be something so mundane like the Trump phone."
